8 this morning, and loving how the DL-103 sounds in this system - warm, but clear in the high freqs. My whole setup is as follows: Thorens TD145 mkII w/ Denon DL-103 (Herbie’s Way Excellent II, Schopper armwand upgrades)—> Black Ice Audio F159 —> NAD T758 v3 analog (L and R of 7.1) inputs for vinyl, HDMI otherwise —> Odyssey Audio Khartago Stereo Plus w/ Kismet board and upgraded caps —> NOLA KOs.

Upgrade train stopped... for now

 However, such was not the case in my system and less so for my tastes. This upgrade to a mc cartridge did not provide the balanced frequency response and performance that I sought. The soundstage, the mid-range and the bass were much better represented with the DL-103 than with many of the mm cartridges I have used previously. With the DL-103, I was hoping to hear much better and more refined upper frequencies

 I was especially interested in being able to hear cymbals shimmer and brush strokes, for example, register with more authority, much as I have heard demonstrated with more expensive systems. Sadly, this was much less apparent for me than for some others. I rechecked my mounting and setup, and even checked for the wax in my ears, and I was still disappointed to hear that the upper frequencies seemed somewhat recessed and not on a par with the cartridge's lower end performance. I realize that a number of factors are involved on the march to audio Nirvana

Like many, I agree that the Denon DL-103 is a very good "entry-level" moving-coil (mc) phono cartridge, when compared with less expensive moving magnet (mm) cartridges. I’ve been rehabbing it slowly and I currently have a nagaoka mp-110 on but it’s not tracking well (I’ve aligned it, set correct overhang, set correct tracking force with scale, etc). After doing some digging i realized that I need a low compliance cartridge that can handle the heavy S tone arm that my TT has. The issue that I’m finding is that the most affordable one is a denon dl-103 ($350). I just wanted to know what else might be out there for cheaper. I’d love an ortofon blue but it also seems like it might not be suitable. Thanks for any advice!

Lower Budget Low Compliance Cartridge?

 The effect was quite pleasant on some of my hotly mastered LPs, like the recent re-release of King Crimson’s In the Court of the Crimson King. Treble is nicely detained while still providing plenty of detail.  Alignment was quite easy. I mounted it on the removeable headshell that came with the Classic turntable, set the overhang with a set of calipers, eyeballed the alignment, and set the tracking force at 2

Swapped this in on a Music Hall Classic Turntable, replacing a Music Hall variant on the AT95E cartridge (which came stock with the table) and a ATVM95EN (which I had swapped the stock cartridge out for). Even before break in, the DL-103 had a very pleasant sound. When compared to the two aforementioned cartridges, the 103 produced a fuller sound, with a more defined midrange and bass. The treble was slightly rolled off, but not excessively so

  Alignment was quite easy. I mounted it on the removeable headshell that came with the Classic turntable, set the overhang with a set of calipers, eyeballed the alignment, and set the tracking force at 2.5 grams. My integrated amp is an Emotiva basX TA1 with a built-in MC/MM preamplifier

 All very good cartridges, especially the DL-110, but in my opinion the DL-103 is the finest cartridge I've ever used. Bear in mind, I have it installed on a vintage DENON DP62L turntable with the S-shaped wand. My preamplifier is a KENWOOD C1 that supports both MM and MC cartridges, and my power amplifier is a CARVER M400a power amp driving the original Smaller Advent speakers.  This cartridge has a HUGH sound stage

 The bass seem to rise from the depths of the earth and the mids and highs are so crisp and detailed that it makes your jaw drop. I remember reading a review of this cartridge in the 70's that said it was called the "Giant Killer" because it compared with moving coil cartridges that cost up to $1000.00. I've never owned a cartridge that expensive, but I will say this cartridge blew my socks off on ALL types of music

These speakers were very difficult to find in the US as they were primarily marketed in Asia. The setup provides a very engaging sound that makes you tap your foot along to the music.

JBL Synthesis System, a dream come true

 I settled on mounting the MP-110 on the Audio Technica AT-LP1240, and its VTA is as versatile as they come. On the AT-LP1240, it’s at approximately 85% of its peak height. This took a ton of trial and error and was a complete pain, as you would expect. Finally, this cart can be a bit edgy on the treble, especially with female artists, but I think it’s more closely associated with a proper VTA setting than anything else

I’ve been using this cartridge for almost two months now and I can happily report that this is a great cartridge, especially considering its cost. I have broken it in using a combination of three different turntables, three different phono preamps, and three different integrated amps.  This is the gear I’ve used:  Turntables: Audio Technica AT-LP1240 U-Turn Orbit Teac TN-550  Phono Preamps: Parks Audio Budgie Tube Phono Preamp U-Turn Pluto Phono Preamp Cambridge CP2 Phono Preamp  Integrated Amps: Outlaw Audio RR2150 NAD c352 Kenwood KA-7300  In addition, these are the cartridges I own and used for comparison: Ortofon 2M Bronze ($440) Ortofon 2M Red ($100) Grado Prestige Gold ($260) Audio Technica AT95E ($45) Audio Technica AT440MLb ($200)  And yes, I have tried every single combination of the components – and yes, it took forever (months). Overall, I would consider the Nagaoka MP-110 my second favorite cartridge of the six I own regardless of price – second only to the Ortofon Bronze, which costs $300 more

 The Nagaoka produces a very pleasant sound, and for every genre of music I threw at it. In addition, it handles surface noise as well as a cartridge possibly can, in my opinion. The MP-110 tends to handle older records and/or poor vinyl pressings very well. It’s also a solid tracker

 There is such a spectrum of price points, that I thought going for lower of the middle of the pack would yield good results, and I am pleased so far. Although I have had great luck with the Grado Blacks I have used in the past and was considering getiing a Grado Green or Blue, this cartridge was a decent purchase for the price, and really seems to be a good value. I'm sure there is more breaking-in to do, but right away I was happy with the tracking, clarity, and stereo separation. I'm just listing to records, not back queuing or scratching, so this seems like a decent choice for quality while being able to save some $$ to buy more records :)

Great Investment For The Price

The Nagaoka is a mellow sounding cartridge with a forward, slightly harsh, midrange, significant midbass hump (but rolled-off deep bass), and slightly harsh highs. The sound is definitely not flat, and the exaggeration of certain frequency while muting of others makes it sound quite colored. However, at low volume levels, is more listenable than other, more accurate $100 cartridges such as the Shure M97, or the 2Mred. If you like accurate sound, this is not it

 Mating it with the correct phono stage is important. Some phono stages, like the Emotiva, also have a slightly forward midrange and would not mate with the Nagaoka. However, more restrained phono stages, such as Pro-Jects or Schiit Mani would be a good match.
