Crucial X8 vs Samsung T7 Shield Portable SSD

I am talking about deteriorating down to 16MB to 20MB per second write speed. And the 2TB drive (bought in May 2021) has never been even half full. ****** Update 17 Mar 2022: Now I am using it on a new Macbook Pro with Thunderbolt 4 ports and cable. It seems to be working MUCH better now than before

1 Gen 2 speeds, or up to 1200 M/sec. See my results. Exactly as advertised. In fact, Samsung claims it will support up to 1050MB/sec read and 1000 MB/sec write scores, and I got 1045 read and 1036 write scores, actually exceeding their claims on the write score

(2) As the available space decreases, so does the writing speed. When it reaches 80% it becomes slower then an old IDE hard drive. This thing has serious design issues written all over it. This is not a cable issue, i tried with the cable provided and other quality ones, and the behaviour is the same, you simply cannot use the whole capacity because as you begin to aproach it the writting speed becomes abismal

I needed more storage for my Mac, so I got this. It works as a drive just fine, but the software that came with it was a dud. I gave up trying to install it. The 'fix' that I found for this problem was too much trouble to bother, so don't get excited about the included software

Until I dropped it and it went belly up. This one won't have that problem since it's solid state, or at least it shouldn't. It loses one star because it doesn't come with any sort of encryption software. I'm using VeraCrypt, which is free, but I would have been nice to have something on the drive

All that said, the Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield is a well-balanced, secure solid-state drive with more ruggedness than most. If you ever take your laptop on the road or into the great outdoors, whether for business or pleasure, you'll appreciate having a drive like the T7 Shield to keep your data safe.
