I have a friend who has a dehydrated banana company out of Hawaii. She has used them all and says the presto's are best in the long run, for the price. &#x200B;. If I am dehydrating just a little the presto is the way to go, to have only 2 or 3 trays full in the excalibur seems like a waste

I’ve always bought the cheapest ones I could find. I never specifically remember getting rid of one, but they don’t seem to follow me when I move. I primarily make beef jerky, but my wife wants to start making fruit leather and dehydrating things from the garden. I remember wanting an Excalibur the last time I was looking. The Brod&amp;Taylor folding away is a huge plus. But I’m sure there are some good ones in between the price of the cheapest one Walmart carries and an Excalibur or Brod&amp;Taylor.

If you were buying a new dehydrator today, what would you get?

 I recommend not running it in front of your TV or next to your pillow. It is softer sounding than a blow dryer.

 BUT, I have maintained a 10 year relationship with it and have moved cross country twice and locally once in that time and it has been one thing that I haven't relinquished. I felt inclined to write this review 10 years later after trying a friend's newer, fancier, more compact model. It had nothing on my old workhorse other than more bells and whistles, being smaller AND taking 20 hours to dry raspberries. I'm sticking with my Presto

 The fan is right on the lid. What you do is just lift up the lid and put it on the side and the fan is right underneath. [Music] And then when you plug it in because this does not have an on and off switch it just you just plug it in and it starts working. blowing air so the air will go into each compartment each tray and dehydrate your your goodies

 You see how wide it is. this is in use so you could use it in this the way it looks like here to put your goodies on top. If you put it in backwards, it stacks down so you could stock it somewhere and put it away. Put it up so we keep it right side up smooth, put your goodies there and ready to start dehydrating

When it’s plugged in, it blows at one temperature. To turn off, you unplug it. It’s rather loud—I wouldn’t be able to sleep in the same room. And it draws enough power to trip a 10-amp breaker by itself

 In addition, the jerky treats are very expensive.  What made me choose this unit was: (1) It is cheap, paid < $40  (2) While watts aren't everything in terms of performance, this has the highest watts for the dollar compared to competing brand bargain models  (3) It collapses to save space. I had a dehydrator a long time ago and remembered one thing I did not like about it was it's large size and difficulty storing if you have a smaller kitchen.  (4) I have a minor preference for heating from the bottom

 It still seems a stretch to call this loud.  Storage: Even though it collapses vertically, this is still a big appliance in terms of diameter and not easy to store in a small kitchen. Make sure you have room for the approx. 15" diameter

 Low tech is good for me!  The best features for me are:  Pros: Not tying up my oven all day or night drying things in the oven. I can leave it on all night without worry. It's very easy to wash after using. It's very quiet

 Purchase bulk produce in season and have fresh all year. Best feature for me, it is a time saver. I will store vegetables for soup and fruit for granolas. I will be able to prepare these favorite dishes on a moments notice! The included booklet has very complete instructions

Wonderful Wonderful

Loud as heck, no temp control, clumsy fitting parts, and no power control. Those are my gripes.  other than that, unit is really good for first timers like me.  The fan is fairly loud, not to the point of drowning out other noises but loud enough to know it's there, buzzing away
