I have a Presto dehydrator with temp controls. I have been attempting to dehydrate fruit for the past year and have yet to have a single successful batch (the only thing that has been edible is fruit leathers.). I would like to make chewy dehydrated pears but no matter how I obsess over them, they never seem to turn out right. I don't really care about color and I don't mind adding sugars, but I do need them to keep their skins on and be soft with a dry candy-like chew.

So first I'd like to add before I give my honest review, this product is great for time to time use and what it offers to light use but there's some down falls that I can see after owning two of these for a year, that could even become annoying to the average user. I run a very small jerky business ...

I have the Presto plastic one with the timer and temperature control. I was having some capacity issues so I bought a second set of trays - now I have 12. I paid $80 or so for it and IMO it works flawlessly.

The construction and quality of the parts on this dehydrator are excellent. I think it is probably sturdy enough to last for several years and hundreds of uses. However, it does have two very big flaws... no timer and no ability to set the dehydrating temperature. After researching several websites ...

I have a friend who has a dehydrated banana company out of Hawaii. She has used them all and says the presto's are best in the long run, for the price. ​. If I am dehydrating just a little the presto is the way to go, to have only 2 or 3 trays full in the excalibur seems like a waste.
