This may improve as I fully learn to operate the camera. Thus far I have found the zoom to operate well but difficult to "fine tune" the desired shot. Image quality with the zoom fully extended is very good, but framing the shot is comparable to viewing through a telescope vs binoculars; a tripod or other stability device is mandatory. i needed it for videos and it doesn't do the job well and the pictures r all so not clear

The digital zoom goes out to 20x, and I was really surprised by how good the image quality is - it produces very usable images at that range. Prior to this I always looked at digital zoom as useless unless you are photographing aliens getting out of a flying saucer and have to stay out of range of their ray guns. Of course it is not perfect. I wish it focused a little faster in still photo modes, but it's fine in most situations

Canon should provide this information about this zoom number capability to consumers instead of practically hiding it. They sure would sell more of these cameras. For this reason, I have to take one star off and give this camera four star. For me, zoom is THAT important! I don't appreciate Canon's not mentioning it
