Canon PowerShot D30 vs Nikon Coolpix W300

The Canon PowerShot D30 ($329.99) is, from an imaging perspective, a very minor update to the older D20 ($330.00 at eBay)(Opens in a new window) . Its lens, 12-megapixel image sensor, and image processor are the same, which is to say they're a couple of years old at this point

As an added bonus on a smart devise all you need to do is tap for a proper focus and exposure point. The near $400 expense just isn't worth it for me. I already have a waterproof phone and if I need to dive deeper than a pool (which I do on occasion) a GoPro is significantly cheaper with significantly better image quality. You would think that a camera company, producing a consumer grade camera would outperform a camera phone

But the water won't come out. I don't understand how it got in! And I really can't get it out. If it's hot out then the water turns to steam and fogs up the whole lens. I really am mad

The digital zoom function on this camera is unbelievable. I had always turned this function off on my other cameras as the end product was so pixelated and blurry, that they aren't usable for my needs. I can stand on a rig floor and zoom in to the crown sheaves at the top of the derrick (0ver 200' away) and clearly see tar buildup and make a decision to go up and take a closer look.

So far, very impressed. Zoom in to see the bald eagle near the top of the tree at the point. That was a long ways away.

The 85' depth is a feature I need and why I chose it over other uw point and shoots. For me, even though the IQ could be better, it beats carrying around expensive and bulky underwater housings on vacation.

Other people on this post are recommending you get a full frame, interchangeable lens camera. I recommend against that because if it's your first camera, you'll want something like the the Nikon Coolpix, Sony Cybershot, or Canon Powershot that will give you a good introduction into photography because they all have multiple features built directly into the camera. A decent point and shoot such as the ones I listed above are a good way to learn what kind of photography you enjoy doing.
