If you're buying new rather than used, the best DSLR you can get for under $500 is the Canon EOS Rebel T7 / EOS 2000D. Part of Canon's entry-level Rebel lineup, the T7 is a great option for beginner photographers, thanks to its simple design and intuitive menu system. Canon also has a ton of E and EF-mount lenses for its APS-C DSLRs, so you can upgrade to better lenses as your skill grows.

Inside the camera is a 24-megapixel APS-C sensor, and it delivers very good image quality overall, with detailed, color-accurate photos straight out of the camera, though its noise handling is just okay, with a lot of noise at higher ISO settings in low light. That said, it feels fairly comfortable to shoot with, and its optical viewfinder gives you a lag-free, unfiltered view of your subjects. Though the camera doesn't have in-body image stabilization (IBIS), it also does an impressive job reducing handheld camera shake when using the optically stabilized 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens.

However, underneath that modest exterior is a high-resolution APS-C sensor that's still fairly capable in image quality. Since this is an older, cheaper model than the Canon EOS Rebel SL3 or the Canon EOS Rebel T8i, it doesn't perform quite as well in dynamic range and noise handling. However, it's still very good for the price, and you can always upgrade your lens down the line for better results.

The best all-around camera we've tested for under $500 is the Canon EOS Rebel T7 / EOS 2000D. I can't talk enough about the benefits of an articulating, touch LCD for landscape and tripod use. It's freeing to be able to compose shots more easily from lower angles, without having to get down on the ground to peer at the rear display or through the optical viewfinder. Canon's closest competing model, the 5D Mark IV, also has a touch LCD that lets you tap on a portion of the frame to set focus, but it doesn't tilt, so you still need to get low to shoot from ground level.

Nikon D850 Review

 I get that storage/bandwidth may be an issue, but this should be a priority for all of these DSLR companies. In 4 years I'm seeing great improvements in resolution, but what good is resolution when I can't tweak results in post and my sky will always blow out if I expose for everything else? It would absolutely be possible to shoot video with acceptable color in a very controlled situation. But if I have that much control, I'm likely to be on a budget where I can afford a camera with high-bitdepth files. So frustrating

  Pros: - Touch screen is nice (with some caveats) - Resolution bump is nice - Improved Live View functionality, tap-to-focus-and-shoot is neat! - Viewfinder is muuuuch better - Shutter sound is nice. d800 was cool but loud, sounded like a guillotine coming down. This is much quieter. - Flip screen is definitely useful, especially for video

  However, I'm finding the autofocus system in video mode to be absolute GARBAGE. Plan on manually focusing. Relatedly, I have focus peaking turned on, but it seems to only work when in Liveview *stills* mode, not video. Still need to figure out why I can't see it when shooting video

 I think for $3,200 they should throw in a 50 cent cord.  Regarding video: It baffles me that cameras that can record 14-bit beautiful images don't offer the option for 10-bit video. I get that storage/bandwidth may be an issue, but this should be a priority for all of these DSLR companies. Fantastic camera, some notable improvements over the d800 but not perfect.

 You can watch tons of review videos where you'll see them leaving the camera on a tripod in rainy weather to do a timelapse, and then they simply dry it off with a towel later. As a result of the weather proofing there is no built-in popup flash to make it far more sealed off. This doesn't bother me at all because I never use that flash, if I need flash I'll use an external one.  Autofocus: If you know anything about the D850, you'll know that the autofocus in the body is industry leading

 As everyone knows, Nikon doesn't do as well as Canon in this regard. Of all Nikon's cameras, the D850 appears to be the best when it comes to shooting video. The autofocus while shooting video is not good, so you'd better settle on using manual focus. None of this means that the D850 will produce bad video

 As stated in the camera's product description, this is great for saving on shutter cycles and improving battery performance.  Video: In addition to the photography I enjoy, I love shooting video. Phenomenal Camera

 An impressive beast like this needs an impressive battery, like the EN-EL18. Yes, I know you can accessorize to use that battery, which I will probably end up doing, but the D850 should be built to use that battery right out of the gate.  -No built-in bottom grip for vertical shooting. Again, this is an impressive camera for serious photographers; it's silly that I should have to pay extra to add a grip

I've been using the (much more expensive) Nikon D4 for my food photography since 2013, but as soon as this camera was announced, I realized it would be much better suited for what I do - high frame rates and high ISO performance just aren't that important to me. Now I've finally bought it!  Generally, I hate straight-out-of-the-box reviews where folks have barely used the product, but I've learned enough in five days of shooting that I feel confident sharing some well-informed first impressions. I owned this product for 30 days. I am not a professional photographer, by any means. What I can say about the camera is that I ended up returning it because it was too heavy, the auto focus was driving me crazy, and it needed a tripod most of the time to take clear detailed photo - especially to photo stack. I like to hold my camera and shoot from odd angles, so this unit was not a good choice for me

 What I can say about the camera is that I ended up returning it because it was too heavy, the auto focus was driving me crazy, and it needed a tripod most of the time to take clear detailed photo - especially to photo stack. I like to hold my camera and shoot from odd angles, so this unit was not a good choice for me. I am also a 5' 2" woman and the weight was too much to hold up for long durations, especially if I wanted a hand held shot. I am currently looking at mirrorless Sony's and Panasonic's for the internal stabilization and full frame options

Beautiful pictures but annoying auto focus and heavy weight

 You know doing this kind of photography. First off. This is a camera that now has an electronic shutter, and i know that's a big change on this camera and it's gon na have a lot of interesting ramifications, but for this kind of work for myself, i'm really liking it, because it's very stable, no mirror slap At all, and this shutter does give a pretty good kick so you know i liked using that trying it out just straight on a tripod, not locking up the mirror. I was noticing a slight resolution advantage there

 Overall, the d850 has incredible image: quality, lots of dynamic range, and that makes it very easy to use so yeah. The d850 wins. I mean it's an incredible camera and it's easily the most full-featured actual slr. That'S on the market

 You might not see it on a low-res file, but you certainly see it here very clearly, and you know one of the things like front focus and back focus that can be very frustrating for slr users is actually very easily taken care of by pro nikon slrs Out of recent times, i love this. They can adjust front and back focusing issues by using the contrast, detect focusing system in the live view and where we would normally have to do this with a test chart, pushing values forward and backwards. The nikon will do automatically for you very easily, it's a beautiful system and it's absolutely essential to have on something like this with 46 megapixels of resolution. Okay, so for this next part, i want to mention that i'm going to be moving forward and backwards

 I didn't need to use nds at all and still get the correct, shutter speed with this. It'S a great feature i'd like to see that, on more video cameras, more low iso, now talking about shooting outside as well, there is a beautiful screen on this. It'S quite bright, it's extremely sharp and it's a touch screen as well, with a little hinge, flippy thing now. This is great because there's no electronic viewfinder, since this is a traditional dslr

 AF-S or AF-P lenses only and only on release settings A or M. I can also report this feature does not work with Tokina 100mm macro which has been my backup for some time now. It might be possible that a firmware update in the future will fix this oversight, but if you do macro work and want to use the best lens on the market this camera body will simply not offer you the auto stack focus feature you might want. It also requires the date to be set to function in this mode as well

8 lens is a creature of the night and low light. Bring your cable release as this guy will do detail you have never thought about capturing. The silent live view photography is brilliant and provides a sharpness I have simply not seen before anywhere.  Huge files are an organizational nightmare, but that is the work we do

 This AF lens is the true top of the line for macro work and almost all by itself is the reason I purchased Nikon equipment anyway. I am certain I would have paused if I knew for certain this was the case with this camera. The news is buried on page 212 of the owners manual.

Nikon 200 mm micro lens will not utilitze the stack focus feature on this camera.
