DSLR vs camcorder for documentary filmmaking ?

 The AVCHD, the image you get off the camera is fantastic, but you can record all day long. You know, the AVCHD codec is going to really give you those small file sizes. The built-in ND filters are fantastic. If you, me, any photographer, any videographer had our choice, you'd have them on every camera that you use

 If you don't, you could run into some issues in grading. But ask yourself this question, what are you going to use it for? For me, I knew I wanted to use it for interviews, the interview setting indoors, the kind of work that I do, and on-camera stuff for myself, and that kind of thing. So interviews, I'm primarily in an indoor setting, for the most part, where I'm going to control the lighting completely and make sure I've got this exposure dialed in exactly where I want it, everything focused where you want it. And I just wanted this camera for that purpose, for that image quality, those skin tones, and the way that Canon Cinema Line spits out the image

 The image quality is fantastic. It's really second to none, and you must expose it correctly. If you don't, you could run into some issues in grading.  But honestly, we've never used that feature because the camera's actually really good at efficiently storing the footage. And one of the biggest things we got spoiled by with the C100 was the introduction of Canon's dual pixel autofocus. This is one of the first cameras to have it, and let's just say it's really hard to pull focus manually after you've been using Canon's dual pixel autofocus for a while. Now I know I probably sound like a Canon fanboy when I talk about the autofocus, but I go to NAB and Cinegear every year, and I'm always interested to visit the other camera company's booths that are sporting their new autofocus or their better autofocus, and I usually try them all or I have them demonstrate them to me, and they're either not very good or they're just subpar

 It comes with two XLR ports, which deliver high quality sound. Now, we were using DSLRs before we got the C100, so we always had to either use the microphone jack or we had to record external audio, which we had to sync later, and both of them didn't give us the best results. And now, after shooting with XLRs built in with the camera, it's really hard to go back to anything else. Now, it may not seem like a big or important feature considering that the camera doesn't shoot 4K, but since audio is so insanely important, it really is a good feature

 This is the FX-30, which is essentially an FX-3 with an APS-C size sensor, but what makes it interesting is that it's less than half the price of the full-frame FX-3 without sacrificing too much when it comes to quality and features. Let's get Undone. ["Jerald Undone"] ["Jerald Undone"] ["He's crazy"] What's happening, everybody? I'm Gerald Undone, and I'm chopping broccoli. Alright, for disclosure, Sony lent me this camera for review, as well as some of the new APS-C lenses

 And I like that the image is oversampled and has consistent framing between 24 and 60 frames per second, which was my biggest complaint about the a7IV. Actually, my biggest complaint about the a7IV was the rolling shutter, and thankfully, this camera has much better performance in that regard. It's not quite as fast as the FX-3 or the stacked APS-C sensor of the Fuji X-H2S, but it sits somewhere in between those and the a7IV. This is also a huge improvement from the previous APS-C cameras from Sony that all had serious Jello problems

  Yes, it's still APSC and whatever it can't do vs. it's full frame counter part. But I already knew what those limitations are when I was using my ZV-E10. Still loved shooting with it because I was focused on what it can do

Everything I wanted in an APSC Camera!

 I mean, this is giving you a sensor area very similar to like a type 1 sensor, image quality will be greatly degraded. But I mean it is nice that it gives you the option of super high frame rate 4K recording. Now that sensor readout is also really important if you do want to take the occasional still with this camera. Because this camera has no mechanical shutter

 If we do wind up getting a full-featured hybrid camera in the future, that would be the better option for me. But if you primarily shoot with the LCD or you need a very capable APS-C cinema camera right now, this is an awesome option. It's substantially less money than a Fujifilm X-H2S, even less money than the GH6 with a smaller sensor, and it's giving you better autofocus than either of those. With this feature set at this price, I can think of so many video creators where this is going to be an absolutely perfect camera for them

 Let's talk about that sensor. That's the exciting part. So when I first started getting briefed on this camera, I thought, oh no, they did not put that ancient 24 megapixel sensor that scanned so unbelievably slowly into a cinema camera, did they? And then I saw the specs and it's like, oh, this is interesting, 26 megapixels. Maybe they got that nice little Fujifilm X-T3, X-T4 sensor in this camera

 It's substantially less money than a Fujifilm X-H2S, even less money than the GH6 with a smaller sensor, and it's giving you better autofocus than either of those. With this feature set at this price, I can think of so many video creators where this is going to be an absolutely perfect camera for them. And hopefully you found this review useful. Sony FX30 Review

 Now, one of the biggest advantages to this camera is that you can use APS-C sized lenses because it's a smaller crop sensor. So you don't have to take as big of lenses when you're out filming. For me, when I'm out shooting my adventure videos, this is much more appealing than taking a full frame camera where I have to take big heavy lenses. And so I can have a smaller setup on those times when I don't wanna carry a ton of extra gear
