DSLR vs camcorder for documentary filmmaking ?

 The AVCHD, the image you get off the camera is fantastic, but you can record all day long. You know, the AVCHD codec is going to really give you those small file sizes. The built-in ND filters are fantastic. If you, me, any photographer, any videographer had our choice, you'd have them on every camera that you use

 If you don't, you could run into some issues in grading. But ask yourself this question, what are you going to use it for? For me, I knew I wanted to use it for interviews, the interview setting indoors, the kind of work that I do, and on-camera stuff for myself, and that kind of thing. So interviews, I'm primarily in an indoor setting, for the most part, where I'm going to control the lighting completely and make sure I've got this exposure dialed in exactly where I want it, everything focused where you want it. And I just wanted this camera for that purpose, for that image quality, those skin tones, and the way that Canon Cinema Line spits out the image

 But honestly, we've never used that feature because the camera's actually really good at efficiently storing the footage. And one of the biggest things we got spoiled by with the C100 was the introduction of Canon's dual pixel autofocus. This is one of the first cameras to have it, and let's just say it's really hard to pull focus manually after you've been using Canon's dual pixel autofocus for a while. Now I know I probably sound like a Canon fanboy when I talk about the autofocus, but I go to NAB and Cinegear every year, and I'm always interested to visit the other camera company's booths that are sporting their new autofocus or their better autofocus, and I usually try them all or I have them demonstrate them to me, and they're either not very good or they're just subpar

 It comes with two XLR ports, which deliver high quality sound. Now, we were using DSLRs before we got the C100, so we always had to either use the microphone jack or we had to record external audio, which we had to sync later, and both of them didn't give us the best results. And now, after shooting with XLRs built in with the camera, it's really hard to go back to anything else. Now, it may not seem like a big or important feature considering that the camera doesn't shoot 4K, but since audio is so insanely important, it really is a good feature

 So that's why I'm primarily talking about Canon cameras. Okay, back to the video. So is the C200 worth it when those cameras are great other options and the R5 is coming? If you are a commercial shooter that shoots a lot of corporate stuff, a lot of doc style shooting, and you want good ergonomics, not too heavy or bulky of a camera, you want autofocus, you want RAW options, good codecs, internal NDs, all that stuff, then this is a very compelling option, especially at the reduced price. You should really look at this camera

 There's the option to get a C200B. Not for me, because I would really like that viewfinder, especially if you're doing run and gun type shooting like we do and having that extra point of contact for handheld stuff is great. The autofocus in this camera is great. That was one feature we were really excited about and that's why I'm not holding it right now and I'm shooting on it because when I do this, it tracks it pretty good

 We don't use this feature as much as we thought we were going to, but it is such a nice feature to have knowing it's there. It could be that I'm just so used to manual focusing on a C100 that I don't use this all that often, but when I do, it's great. For aisle walks at weddings, I usually shoot on like a 135 f2 Canon lens or an 85 1.4 Canon lens and it's so nice to be able to just focus on my composition, being able to get a nice tight shot of the bride's face, seeing the groom for the first time and the autofocus 90, 80% of the time does exactly what I want it to do

 Good size. I like where it's placed. But just the brightness, not the best. But nice to have the internal EVF, the viewfinder for bright sunlight situations

I only had the camera for a short amount of time, but we were able to grab a few hours to go out and shoot some tests, including some with my SLR Magic Anamorphic lenses

 Or you could swap over to the CFast card and record RAW at 4K, 12-bit, with 15 stops of dynamic range. This is amazing and has excellent image quality, but it comes with the drawback of massive files. The other thing I'm digging is the slow motion. With this one, you can get 120 frames per second at 1080, and the big upside here is that unlike my C300 Mark II or any of the others, this does not crop in on the image
