My second son was going to graduate from that same college and the ceremony was going to be an evening ceremony and at the same poorly lighted location (I believe that, after paying for four years of college, parents should be entitled to having the graduation ceremony in a well-lighted location and close enough access to take photos of their children during the ceremony without fast, heavy telephoto lenses, but, apparently, my belief is not shared by those in positions to do something about it). So I concluded that I needed a camera with a bigger image sensor that had better low-light, high-ISO performance. The full-size sensor digital SLRs were too expensive for me, so I checked on the cameras with smaller sensors. After reviewing camera reviews of various SLRs on low-light, high-ISO performance, I concluded that my choices were limited to Canon or Nikon digital SLRs with the APS-C sensors

The icing on the cake is the ability to shoot HD video. A still and separate video camera really are needed to take shots of any serious nature. The right tool for the right job holds true. BUT, it is nice to be able to flip it over to liveview and start recording

I have a decent compact now and for most shots I'm happy with it.It's not about the camera, it never was, the thing that gets the aahs and oohs is what's in the picture and how you arranged it, and that's the much more difficult part.

8D lens so it focused quickly and sharp, color me impressed. Battery life is as I expected, maybe a little longer than expected actually! At max I could get a days worth of shots if I ignore using the flash. And stayed off the lcd screen as much as possible. Otherwise two batteries seems about right

For serious reach in birding you'll have to spend a lot more money. The 75 - 300 has decent reach and if you have it stopped down to f8 and are shooting in sunlight you should be able to get pretty good close-ups of birds. The Canon 100 - 400 mm L lens is a very popular birding lens that will be much sharper than what you have and can be had for under $1,000 used, but it's not going to give you much more reach. If you're looking to zoom in much closer, you're going to be in 500 to 600 mm territory which gets very expensive very quickly

Nikon includes a 18-105mm VR lens, and Canon includes a 28-135mm IS lens. Both have Vibration Reduction/Image Stabilization, and both cost about the same if you bought them separately. On a crop frame camera (aps-c size), which both of these are, The 18-105mm is more usefull and versatile as an all purpose lens. Weight is similarly svelte, below every 5D and the 7D, and about even with the 60D. The larger cameras will balance a bit better with heavy lenses; this 6D will be the preferable travel body by a small margin. New relative to the 5D II are improved weather sealing and a much-appreciated mode dial lock.
