used nikon d750 or a canon 5d mark iii. both can be found well under $1000 dollars and offer a tried and true full frame sensor and compatibility with a host of affordable glass backed by a strong used market!

I work in local journalism and I'm ready to invest in a decent camera. My top is $1000. I mainly shoot the stories I work on which can range from business openings to protests.  So if you've got a drawer full of Nikkor lens go for the D800. If you've got Canon L-glass out the wazoo go for the 5D Mark III. For the entire review, a lot more information than what I've given you today, go to technobuffalo.com

 It's just a few ounces lighter than the D800. However, it's still a cinder block when you put a giant lens on. Now there's one last thing to talk about and that's the Mark III's battery. This uses the same battery as the Mark II and that's huge because the Nikon D800 uses a brand new pack when compared to the D700

 Now let's consider one thing right now. The D800 has 36 megapixels of full frame fury which means the Mark III only has two thirds of that resolution. Therefore if you're considering a medium format camera the D800 might be a viable alternative. Canon jazzed up the video on the Mark III

 But not Canon. They want gangbusters on the Mark III's AF options. In fact, the autofocus features are so extensive on the Mark III I could do an entirely separate review on just that alone. So I'm going to be really brief in this review

Canon EOS 5D Mark III Review

 Now what if you're a wildlife photographer? You might be thinking about the Mark III because of the awesome autofocus system and I really do appreciate the autofocus system when I'm shooting moving wildlife. However I don't recommend it for wildlife photographers. Instead in the Canon world I steer them towards the 7D. The 7D provides great autofocus not as good but good enough and it's got that 1

 I did a suite of real-world tests covering just about every type of photography you could think of and I could find no area where the image quality was better on the 5D Mark III. I then followed up with a series of controlled lab tests and what I found was that the 5D Mark III had improved image quality at ISO 50,000 and 100,000 and below that no noticeable improvement in image quality. This was pretty shocking to me because when I upgraded from my Canon 10D to my Canon 5D there was a massive image quality improvement and then when I upgraded from my 5D Classic to my 5D Mark II again it's like the image quality like doubled. The image quality from the 5D Mark II to 5D Mark III goes up about 3% according to DxO's objective testing

 According to my own subjective testing I couldn't tell the difference and I was a little scientific about it. I made a series of lab tests comparing pictures from the 5D Mark II to the 5D Mark III and gave them to about two dozen different photographers and the number who picked the 5D Mark III's pictures in a blind test? Zero. In fact a lot of people picked the 5D Mark II's pictures. I'm not going to tell you that the 5D Mark II has better image quality but it doesn't have worse image quality than the 5D Mark III

 You can even import a photo that you've already taken on the memory card and create a double exposure like that. When you're done, it'll save the multiple exposure along with the photos you used to make the multiple exposure, so if you hate it, you still have the source photos to mess around with. That's honestly one of those super cool features that I just don't use often enough in the camera, and as I'm making this video, it's a little reminder. Hey Lou, use that feature you shithead

 To me, the 5D Mark III has some truly brilliant colors. Photos are incredibly malleable too. If you shoot raw, you can seriously do a ridiculous amount of editing to them in Lightroom. Dynamic range is impressive, especially for a camera that was released in 2012

 It really is the little things in this camera. The 5D Mark III has a built-in multiple exposure mode, so you can take a picture and use it as a grid for the second or third or however many exposures you're going for in there. You can even import a photo that you've already taken on the memory card and create a double exposure like that. When you're done, it'll save the multiple exposure along with the photos you used to make the multiple exposure, so if you hate it, you still have the source photos to mess around with

 This is honestly one of the most useful setups in the camera. I use it every single time I take pictures. It's amazing, in single point autofocus you can use the joystick to select someone's eye, and honestly I'd say 90-95% of the time I'm in sharp focus. It's a really really amazing system

 The photos I've taken with this camera improved over the years, certainly as I began to push the camera further and take advantage of all of its amazing features. But frankly, the photos are fucking brilliant. I love the images. Pair that with the single point autofocus selection with the joystick on the back of the camera, and you have a sick setup to crush weddings, portraits, and pretty much every scenario you can think of

 For photography, the autofocus is great. Although there is not autofocus points across the majority of the screen, I don't have any complaints having used this for the last couple of years. Unfortunately for video, you're going to have to set focus at select points throughout your shoot or manually focus before and during the shoot if need be. The best DSLR camera that we've tested for beginners is the Canon EOS Rebel T8i. It's one of the most well-rounded entry-level DSLRs we've tested. It has a fully-articulated touchscreen, a 24-megapixel APS-C sensor, and 4k video capability, a rarity for many beginner DSLRs. The camera is also very comfortable to shoot with and has a highly intuitive menu system, with explanations of settings for novice users.

Overall, it delivers very good image quality out of the box, and photos look relatively sharp and noise-free as you raise the ISO for more dimly-lit conditions. Its autofocus system is excellent for a beginner DSLR, with quick and reliable tracking performance and a fair amount of cross-type detection points for more accurate focusing. The camera can also record 4k video, has an excellent autofocus system, and has very good battery life&mdash;everything you need and then some. The Nikon D5600 is also worth considering in this price range, especially if you need something a tad more portable, but it isn't as well-rounded, with no 4k and a less reliable autofocus system. Overall, the T8i is one of the most full-featured beginner DSLRs around, and it's a great option for those looking for something that falls in the sweet spot between budget and higher-end models.

Mirrorless options are a great choice for hybrid or video shooters thanks to their quick autofocus systems, but you can't go wrong with a tried-and-true DSLR camera for photography. The best DSLR under $1,000 is the Canon EOS Rebel T8i. It's Canon's most capable entry-level DSLR, with just about all you need in a starter camera.

6x crop sensor plus a 2x crop for 4k video.  I recorded to a Ninja V (mainly to be able to break the 30 minute mark). Footage looks good for the price on an entry level camera. Not a huge dynamic range, but it looks good, especially after being able to dial things in with the tools on the Ninja V

I was going to go with the 90d, but Canon refuses to fix the 24P clean out bug (outputs as 30P even though 24P is selected). My workflow is to blu-ray which means I need 24P. After considering dropping Canon altogether, I decided to stick with the T8i (and hand down my T4i to my daughter and share my lens collection)

Great beginner camera, "meh" upgrade for the hobby photographer.

 A lot of room to grown and learn. One thing I won't discuss because I don't use it, is the video mode. I'm using this primarily as a camera. Video is extra and may be used at some point but that isn't a consideration

 Always fuzzy. This is my issue, not the camera's I’m sure. Or so I thought but upon reading many Canon lens reviews I find a common thread among some is the auto focus either doesn’t work or stops working.  The camera body is surprisingly light although for my smaller women’s hands I find it a little awkward, especially the shutter button

  In the end I ended up returning it due to the lens. It really doesn’t do the work I wanted a camera for and the lenses are so confusing and expensive. The lens should compliment the camera and not drag it down.

You could really even look at a t7, same camera really, big drawback is no flip screen but it’s less than half the price, otherwise just get the t8i or sl3 you will be able to take fantastic photos with any of them, modern camera sensors are so good and that is a decent kit lens, you can add an ef-s 55-250 is stm lens as well if you want a nice telephoto zoom to complete the kit. You will be more than happy with the quality of images you can produce, the only limitation will really be your technique,.

I'm looking into getting my first camera after a few years. One of my ex-girlfriends had a T3i and I enjoyed using it. Learned a little bit about aperture, ISO, etc. I'm currently looking to get back into photography just as a hobby. I would like to have a camera that is capable of taking nice photoshoot/portrait style photos (think outdoor photoshoot) and some landscapes. I am taking a trip out east this summer to visit my dad is COVID protocols permit.

Currently I am deciding between the T8i and the SL3.

This camera would mostly be used for some outdoor photoshoot type pictures for friends, and then also for Instagram/travel pictures of landscapes. I know I will need a wider lens for the landscapes so I'm interested in learning more about that.
