There is no mystery as to why – pellet grills offer the control of a household kitchen oven but produce the flavor and texture of charcoal grills and wood smokers. Traditionally, they are not the type of grill that you'd want to tote along with you on an RV trip or to tailgate the big game, but the  Camp Chef Portable Pellet changes that. With a bit of clever design, this model collapses to a size that can be wheeled around and transported into spaces that are a fraction of the size of where most pellet grills can fit. The controls for this grill are digital, allowing you to select the exact temperature you need for the cut you're cooking. If the controls weren't precise enough, there are two digital thermometer probes so that you know exactly when your meat's internal temperature has reached the perfect point. There's no need for piezo buttons, a lighter, or starter fluid with this grill because the ignitor is electric. 
Some of the things we love the most about the Camp Chef Portable Pellet tie directly to its weaknesses. Not only is the ignitor electric, but so is the auger that feels pellets from the hopper into the grill, which means that this grill needs to be plugged into an AC outlet. If you're at home, in an RV, or have a decent power bank, this isn't much of an issue. But for folks that like to go completely off-grid, this model isn't going to work for you. Much like charcoal grills, pellet grills take some time before they're ready for cooking and the Camp Chef Portable Pellet takes a while to warm up. Lastly, this model is really heavy compared to most of the portable grills in our review. The wheels are helpful, but it's not very fun to drag this grill very far from your vehicle. Despite that, we loved cooking with this portable pellet grill – it is the perfect addition to an RV setup.

Such a great little grill/smoker with outstanding features.

We have had this smoker a while now. It's portable and does a good job when you can keep the temperature set. See the issue we have is that the auger has a hard time keeping the pellets moving through the unit. No matter what pellets you use

Disappointed with consistency

 The top grate has fallen out me a few times, I usually remove this. May add some fireproof gasket material to ash pan and replace the grate. Simple stuff, Camp Chef.

 The grease bucket attachment and location are a trainwreck. The bucket is unstable when attached. If there's any kind of wind, the grease usually ends up dripping down the leg, onto the wheel, and then on the ground. Unacceptable

 If you don't have a cover, the ash pan will clang around like church bell on windy days. I remove the bucket and ash pan when I put her to bed. I highly recommend a cover. You're just throwing your money otherwise

 There is a procedure for starting the Smoker after it has been transported and a procedure for shutting it down. Cleaning is easy, take out the two rack and the drip pan, spray with oven cleaner, wait, scrub and hose off. I spray PAM on the above before reinstalling, makes for easy clean up. While the above is out, take an old paint brush, sweep the ashes from the side and vacuume the ashes up

Small but cooks a lot!

  Being portable was a what made me choose this model. It is portable but definitely pushing one guy doing it mostly cause of the size.  I would say its definitely capable of cooking a good some of meat for I'd say easily a group of 10 if doing burgers or ribs. Can definitely hold a good size pork butt also

Update this is like cheating it's so easy

The smoker came damaged. Was shorting out my home electrical, and the internal thermometer was severely bent. Customer service at Camp Chef was fantastic. Talked me through a diagnostic process

 So as expected / I'm satisfied. Have confirmed temperature settings with thermal gun and range is +/- 10 degrees. Good. The grates are good quality, I lined the grease tray & bucket with foil and clean up after the past few days of cooks was easy

Quality pellet grill, large cooking area, plenty of features

 It was a little less expensive than the Traeger but my husband says it’s sturdier and better made. He has also grilled veggies on it. They turn out great too!

 This grill is quite heavy and having a handle on both ends makes it easy to maneuver and handle. 2) The steel drip tray needs a better design to guide the grease drippings directly into the external spout that the drip bucket hangs on. The steel drip tray on this Pro Series 575 deposits grease falling into a channel from front to back inside the grill with very little of the drippings going into the spout exiting the grill that the drip bucket hangs on. This creates high maintenance mess inside the grill making it harder to clean

Enraged from Broken Traeger after only 4 months

I have had a PRO 575 for 4 months now and the thing can’t hold a temp below 200. When set there it will run 40-50 degrees over and really doesn’t seem to be able to stay at or below 200. I’ve already replaced the thermocouple and controller and that hasn’t fixed anything. Traeger support said it’s a software issue, but they have no timeline for when it will get fixed

Considering the premium you’ll have to pay anyways getting it imported, I think the Timberline is a good value. Traegers are great easy to use grills, so you’re on the right track there.

I host a monthly poker game with a few friends, normally comprising of about 9-12 players which need feeding so I thought the Timberline 1300 was a good size for that...

The choices here are very limited - I don't like that I'd be spending £2500 on a smoker, stings a little more knowing it's only $1999 in North America.... but at the same time, if it's great value for the money and it's able to last me 10 years then I'd be ok with it. This would be my one and only smoker.

I guess what I'm really after is confirmation bias... or for someone to say there's better smokers for less money...

Traeger Timberline 1300 for first smoker?

Update: I was partially incorrect. The controller temp is typically 25-40 degrees cooler than what the ambient temperature actually reads (I purchased a third party probe). So as long as you increase the temp by that amount to make up for it, it does maintain that temp really well. I updated my review to four starts

 Traeger shipped me a new controller and it made no difference.  The thermocoupler (heat probe) location is the worst location you can put it. You'll have a hard time not banging into it when putting the bottom grill grate in and out.  The hopper clean out should have at least been on the side of the box, not on the back

  RESEARCH AND GOOGLE TRAEGER PRO 575 BEFORE BUYING  This grill cannot maintain low temperatures. You want to use this thing for "low and slow" cooks. When you set it to low temps (below 300 in my experience), it rockets to temperatures much higher than you set the controller to. See pic
