If you want to get yourself one at the minute, it's between 50 pound and 60 pound, which is a lot cheaper than something like a tube screamer or other overdrive pedals that are as iconic from back in the day as on now, like these whole unchanged ones. Like you can't really change your tube screamer and you can't really change your boss SD one. They've kept it as it is, and it's not a lot of money

 The custom mode has been said to be a bit more friendly on single coils, but I've never had any bother with this. If you've got the money and you prefer that one, a bit more refined, totally rocket, but I'm happy with my boss SD one. 5 Reasons You NEED A Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive! - This Little Yellow Pedal Is Iconic, & Here's Why!

 Hey folks, Dagon here from PMTV UK and here are five reasons why you need a BOSS SD1 Super

 The first one is in the fact that this is actually one of my favourite overdrive pedals

 This one right here from this video is my own personal BOSS SD1, it was the second pedal

 The first one was a BOSS TU2 which I'm using on the floor right now and this was the SD1,

 my first overdrive pedal that I got when I started guitar 145 million years ago.

 But that's not the reason why you should buy one.

 The reason you should buy one, well the first reason anyways, is the fact that it's way

 You can use this guy for your core tone, use it to boost your signal for a solo, leave

 it as an always on pedal to get to that next level of like metal plateau, it's used by

 funk players, metal players, blues players and everyone in between.

 This was released in the mid 80s okay and it quickly became one of the most famous overdrive

 Moving on from one of the first ever BOSS compact pedals of the overdrive, the BOSS

 Eddie Van Halen used one, Steve Vai used one, Prince used one, some of the biggest metal

 bands in the world used them to push their amps to the next level of tonal awesome mind

 Zakk Wylde uses one and so many folk use them for many different applications but they all

 Okay, so the way I used it in the intro was the most common way of using an overdrive

 pedal and that's just to boost a little overdrive and already overdriven a signal to either

 give you more grip for your core tone or a bit more, I don't know, sustain and saturation

 So, an overdrive, what an overdrive does essentially is adding something to your tone.

 What differs to a distortion pedal like the iconic little Orange Boss DS-1, a distortion

 pedal changes your tone to make it sound distorted.

 Overdrive adds something to it as opposed to manipulating the signal itself, if that

 And the Boss SD-1 has a really unique way of colouring the sound because it has asymmetrical

 We're going to get quite techy here for a second, so there's symmetrical clipping and

 Symmetrical clipping is something that you'll find in something like an Ibanez Tube Streamer,

 another very popular, way more expensive overdrive pedal, whereas asymmetrical gives you odd

 and even harmonics, which is a lot of crazy words I know, but actually Boss have the patent,

 well Roland, who owned Boss, have the patent to this asymmetrical clipping circuit, so

 the way to get this kind of classic iconic tone, on a mass produced basis anyways, is

 Now this asymmetrical clipping doesn't, it does, it colours your tone a bit more than

 a symmetrical clipping, so your tone isn't as original as it was when it went in, but

 colouring the tone, colouring the sound isn't necessarily a bad thing when it's coloured

 in such a beautiful way, so colouring tone doesn't mean you lose tone, it's just coloured

 making it sound different, and in this case, better, in my opinion.

 So this has more of a fuller, less direct overdrive, like I said, Tube Streamers are

 very mid-focused and pointy, this is more balanced overall.

 So that could be your core tone, you haven't got to just boost it for solos, that could

 be your jam and you could use an extra boost if you want to boost the solos.

 And the sustain of that is just awesome.

 Another way, from all the bluesy sound, is to make this kind of be your core tone, almost

 So this is the clean sound of this Blackstar, right?

 So instead of boosting a signal to get more of something, you're using the DS-1 to get

 a tone, like a rich kind of harmonic distortion tone.

 Another way to use one, instead of using the pedal actual gain to get your tone, is to

 So when you use it as an overdrive, like go back to distortion, you're using the drive.

 When you turn the drive down, say let's have it at two o'clock, you're not using a lot

 of the actual drive circuit in it, you're using the color that I was talking about before,

 and the level, so you're actually boosting more signal going into the front of the amp,
