If you're low on space, the best 5.1 soundbar with a standalone design that we've tested is the Bose Smart Soundbar 900. It's the same bar that comes with the full setup, but without the subwoofer and satellites that take up extra room in your living space. It has a pretty wide and immersive-sounding soundstage that moves sound all the way to the walls of your room, too.

The standalone bar offers a lot of the same features as the full setup, including the ADAPTiQ room correction feature.  Basically, you have the standard left right center and then also left and right, surrounds, making five channels and an additional two up firing channels that you can see on top of the bar. If you get the base module, then it connects wirelessly to the bar. But if you use a different sub, then there is a wide connection. If you go with the satellites, then they're connected wirelessly and just require power, but the power bricks are bigger than the satellites themselves

 The sub does offer noticeable improvements too, for those who want deep, rumbly bass. If you plan to watch a lot of movies and want an immersive experience, then the satellites do help significantly. Both for 5.1 sounds from around you, but also if you want to get an improved object, positioning in atmos content, it's probably not worth going down this route, though, because at this point you might as well go with the samsung hw q950a

 For example, the bose 900 can correct for this, though, through a feature advertised as adapter cube. Basically, you wear a headset connected to the bar and the soundbar adapts to your room, and this adaptation is saved. So when you watch movies or listen to music, the soundbar sounds the way that they want it, regardless of the room. This allows the soundbar to sound great and neutral in our room, as well as yours, it's one of the best we've tested which results in a great sound for music or movies

Have the soundbar 900 and it's pretty good but I feel like it's missing more of the low end compared to my 300, funnily enough. Thinking of getting the bass module 500 but I wasn't sure if it would actually be useful for me. I don't care about loud booms during explosions or whatever in film, I just want a richer lower end in general that helps boost the immersion of say, listening to an orchestra or watching a disney musical.  For such an expensive device, having to go through connecting your device to bluetooth every time you use a non supported app or service compared to just pressing a single button on an iPhone really puts a dent in the usability of the soundbar if you do not own an iPhone. This is disappointing.

 It did not improve the quality of my listening experience enough to justify the price difference and glitchy performance. My husband loves old-school Bose speakers so the bar was set high (so to speak), but this speaker simply did not deliver. Not as important to me but still annoying is Bose's lack of integrated music streaming services such as YouTube Music (which is what we subscribe to) and Google Music. Back in the box it goes to be returned

 Dialogue mode kept turning off at random times. The soundbar's volume functions would not stay programmed to my Chromecast remote, something my old Yamaha soundbar never failed to do.  Really? The way they have you connect the power wires to the speaker is nothing but stupid. Has Bose heard of simple power plugs? Now for the sound bar. Sleek, slim, sexy !

 The sub transformed the experience. Our living room is about 15X18 with 12 ft ceilings and this Bose has no problem filling it up. It was little pricey but all in all worth it

While the very low price of the Vizio V-Series 2.1 Home Theater Sound Bar V21-H8 had us momentarily questioning our ears, we can assure you this soundbar sounds better than several more expensive competitors, while offering a dearth of useful features and presets. There is a powerful subwoofer that Vizio recommends placing next to or behind the audience, where increased proximity to the rumbly bass makes for an exciting experience. Dialogue enhancement and night mode also make for a great viewing experience at lower volumes.
Though this model is solid for the price point, it can't hold a candle to the higher-end model in terms of overall sound quality. While powerful, the bass can sound muddy and overwhelm the rest of the mix. When we did turn the bass down, the weak mids and sometimes harsh treble became more apparent. This isn't too much of a problem when watching action films at high volumes, but it makes for a poor experience when using the soundbar to listen to music. Still, this soundbar is a monumental improvement over any built-in TV speakers, and if your bank account can't absorb a high-end sound system to pair with your newly acquired flat screen, the Vizio V-Series 2.1 Home Theater Sound Bar is a very solid option.
