Look into getting a used copy of either a Sony A7S or a BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K (BMPCC 4K). The Sony will be slightly better, but I’m not a fan of Sony from back then. The BlackMagic is really good in its class (micro 4/3 sensor) and will be a great choice, if you are OK with manual focusing. Btw, battery like sucks on both, so get some spares

Ok, so I've got about 2 years into my major as a film student, and our professors let us use our phones as cameras for the first year as the first year focuses more on concepts and ideas instead of the actual meat (cinematography, directing, lighting, etc...)

I'm someone particularly fond of close-up shots and low light shots, and I was wondering if there is a budget camera that can take some good shots regarding those factors.

My budget's around 900$, maybe a bit more or less. Any suggestions are hella appreciated 🙌🙌

What is a Good Low-Light Camera for film-making?

 What's good guys, I know it's been a minute, but I finally had an opportunity to test out the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K, man that's such a big name, but man, we got some stuff to talk about, man, let's get into it. First and foremost, before we get into this review of the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K, I gotta stop saying the whole name, so I'm just going to refer to it as Blackmagic in this video because I do not want to be saying this whole name of this camera this entire video.  This isn't going to be another A73. This isn't going to be a GH5. You're going to have to rig this up. You're going to have to pay the price for storage

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4k Review | The Inconvenient BEAST!

 Now was that out of familiarity? It could be, but over the course of the trip, we had more footage from the pocket 4Ks than any other camera we brought along. And granted we did have three pocket 4Ks with us, but looking back on it, it's not really why we ended up using them more often. It kind of comes down to the fact that you can actually use MFT lenses and EF lenses with them, which makes it easy to switch between various lenses and again, making it less bulky than the 6K Pro if you need to use MFT lenses with it, which don't get me wrong. The 6K Pro is an excellent camera, but unless I have a need for the 6K footage, I don't really use it as much as the pocket 4K

 It kind of comes down to the fact that you can actually use MFT lenses and EF lenses with them, which makes it easy to switch between various lenses and again, making it less bulky than the 6K Pro if you need to use MFT lenses with it, which don't get me wrong. The 6K Pro is an excellent camera, but unless I have a need for the 6K footage, I don't really use it as much as the pocket 4K. Some of that's due to the storage space and some of that's due to the fact that I can use a wider array of lenses with the pocket 4K than with the 6K Pro. Something similar happened to me in Olympic National Park a few months ago

 I also had just gotten the Ursa G2 and actually it brought three pocket 4Ks with me as I headed out onto the Dalton Highway in Alaska. It is an incredibly remote hall road that goes all the way up to the Arctic Ocean, an insane part of the world. And it's just vast and open and barely anyone is out there.  Well, it might surprise you that most movie theaters are not set up to project 4k. In fact, there's only a handful of them. Most cinemas in the US are only at the 2k standard. And even more surprising is that the most popular movie camera in the business, the Arri Alexa, isn't even a 4k camera

 But I kind of wish the body was a little heavier so you could reduce that weight and all that bulk and size and have something a little more beefy but small. When it comes to rigging, it's also a little awkward because of the width of this camera. It's a very wide camera and part of that is the screen. And of course, we've got the battery in the grip off to one side

 And for a couple gigs more, you can switch over to raw, which is pretty impressive. When it comes to dynamic range, things are looking really good on this camera. And it's pretty impressive how far you can push your files. I would say it's very similar to the GH cameras in that even in pro res, you've got a lot of flexibility

The Blackmagic Pocket 4K is INSANE

Shoot professional high-definition cinema footage with theZ CAM E2-S6 Super 35 6K Cinema Camerawith a Canon EF lens mount. The camera features a Super 35 sensor with 10-bit 4:2:2 color support and nominal 14 stops of dynamic range, supports timecode, shoots up to 6K at up to 75 fps, and records data up to 300 Mb/s onto CFast 2.0 media.

Supported recording formats include ZRAW format, MOV and MP4 using H.265 for 10-bit recording, while H.264 supports 8-bit recording, and firmware 0.88 allows the camera to record in the ZRAW format. Its HDMI 2.0 port supports 4K60, 10-bit 4:2:2 video output. Audio is recorded in 24-bit 48 kHz using AAC or PCM (PCM for MOV format only) through its 3.5mm stereo jack or via a separately available XLR connector using its 5-pin LEMO port.

The E2-S6 can be controlled via serial ports, a 2.5mm LANC connector, a USB Type-C port, Ethernet port, or by the Z Camera iOS app to control the camera via Wi-Fi and to view a live image preview and to configure settings. The camera can record time-lapse, slow motion, and can even live stream via its Gigabit Ethernet port. You can also control it locally by the buttons along the side of the camera.

The E2-S6 can be powered by a separately available battery using the built-in L-series battery mount, or you can power the camera using a separately available power adapter using its 2-pin LEMO port. The camera also features a 12 VDC 2-pin LEMO power output to provide power to separately available accessories.

 As far as batteries go, if I'm on a long day shoot, I definitely go the V-mount route, especially with the Pockets, because those little batteries, they, I don't know, it was like 20, 30 minutes max. So definitely, as far as battery power goes, definitely gonna give it to the Z Cam. So when it comes down to media storage, you could do, on the Blackmagics, you could do SD card, CFast, or external SSD. On the Z Cam, you have the option of CFast or SSDs, and which, by the way, the Z Cam Facebook group is phenomenal

 As far as image quality goes, both cameras are freaking great. I love the image from both of the cameras, like you can't go wrong, whether you choose the Pockets or the Z Cam. So with the Z Cam, I definitely feel like it's a lot easier to rig out and stuff like that.  What is going on, world? So today we're here to talk about my personal opinion on the Z Cam and in comparison to the Pocket 4K. So I previously owned the Pocket 4K before switching over to Z Cam, which we're shooting on right now. I have the E2S6, which is a Super 35 sensor that shoots up to 6K. So I actually brought the Z Cam with me on a shoot in Cancun, which I ended up catching COVID and I haven't posted in a while

 If you have any freaking questions or any concerns about something that may or may not work with your camera, definitely search it up, do your research before you dive in. So if I had to nitpick about Z Cam, is that there's a lot of stuff that they say that you can or can't use. As far as image quality goes, both cameras are freaking great. I love the image from both of the cameras, like you can't go wrong, whether you choose the Pockets or the Z Cam

 That's what we have with the E2S6 it's a progression a step forward it's a bump in specs we're getting 6K resolution now we're getting a larger sensor so there's less noise we're getting a locking EF mount some little features and some big features that add up to a better product. I want to thank Zcam and everybody over there I call them the Z team for sending me this camera for review I really really appreciate it.  The Speed Booster gives us a shallower depth of field and it reduces the optical difference between the two sensor sizes. I haven't actually talked about the most important aspect of this camera, that would be the 6K resolution, so let's look at the resolution and see what this camera is really giving us. In 6K open gate the highest resolution you'll get is 6244 by 4168 and this is what it looks like if I scale it down to fit in a 4K window. Pixel to pixel this is what the actual resolution looks like

 I think what we're seeing is the progression of technology and affordability as the components become more affordable and more accessible we're getting to see some higher technology some better specs coming down in price. And that's great for us as consumers we get better cameras they can shoot a lot better video for a lot less money than they used to cost. That's what we have with the E2S6 it's a progression a step forward it's a bump in specs we're getting 6K resolution now we're getting a larger sensor so there's less noise we're getting a locking EF mount some little features and some big features that add up to a better product.  As I move through the other resolutions I'm going to superimpose them on top of this one since this one will contain all of them and you can see how they compare. These higher resolution modes are a simple crop of the full sensor readout. In fact you can see where my framing got moved just a little bit, the trees don't quite line up with the 6K open gate image. 5K sounds like a drop in resolution until you realize that it's the full vertical size of the sensor and just a little bit off the edges

Z CAM E2-S6 Review - 6K cinema camera with Super 35 sensor

 But the most exciting thing for me is the fact that this camera has the ability to change its mounts. Once you take this lens off, right now I have a Micro Four Third mount on it, but it has four screws on here that you can detach and you can switch it out to a PL, EF, or Micro Four Thirds like I actually have on this camera right now. I personally have a PL and EF mount as well, and that just gives me a lot more range and options when it comes to lenses I could use from cine style lenses with PL mounts, all the two Micro Four Thirds lenses if I need to that cover the Super 35 sensor. Like I said before, they advertise the Z Cam E2S6 as having 14 stops of dynamic range
