I just bought an Audio Technica VM540ML to replace an Ortofon 2m red and the improvement was so huge I bought a second one the same day to replace a Rega Elys 2. The sound is so good it’s reinvigorated my love for vinyl. Everyone’s East is different but for me this is an incredible cart and makes vinyl fun again.

I’ve been running a vintage Shure M91ED on my Micro Seiki MR-411 and now I’m looking towards upgrading to get better sound. I’d love some recommendations in the sub $300 price range. I mostly listen to rock, blues, jazz, but I have a little bit of everything.

Recommendations for a cartridge upgrade.

I've been inside a few 40 year old Technics turntables and they've been well built, and still going strong to this day. In terms of cartridges, I've recently replaced my Ortofon 2M Blue with an Audio-Technica VM540ML. I'd say the AT is an improvement over the 2M Blue. The Blue sounded a bit forward in the midrange recessed in the treble where as the 540ML sounded much more even throughout the whole range

I’m looking to purchase a mid-level turntable to replace my Sony PSHX500. 

I’m relatively new to vinyl and Hi-Fi, only started on the journey at the beginning of the pandemic. My set up is an Audiolab 6000A integrated amp paired with Wharfedale Evo 4.1 bookshelf speakers.

I’m looking to upgrade the Sony turntable but don’t have the resources to go too high-end. I’ve done a bit of research and have narrowed my shortlist down to the Technics SL1500c and the Pro-Ject X1.  

Ultimately, I’m looking for a turntable that will provide an improvement to the sound I’m getting from the Sony and the option to upgrade in the future. I will be sticking with the Phono stage in the Audiolab for now, but may buy a separate phono preamp in the future.

I figured I’d get the views of the Turntable community. I guess the key questions would be: are the shortlisted turntables any good? What cart should I ultimately look to pair with either turntable? And will they last a long time? Any other advice you have would be greatly appreciated.

  It *IS* a nice sounding cartridge, it just isn't much better for the price.  Oh and as for the stylus replacement option, do not take the bait. The stylus is about 80% of the entire cost of the cartridge. I would rather just buy a new cartridge if I wore out a stylus for the cost

 So I played around with impedance and capacitance settings on my preamplifier and discovered this cartridge seems to produce better high-end at 100pF.  After all this tinkering, I am a bit disappointed, there is just very little if any noticeable improvement in sound quality for a cartridge costing $70 more than the AT-120 (replaced by VM530).  It *IS* a nice sounding cartridge, it just isn't much better for the price.  Oh and as for the stylus replacement option, do not take the bait

I can't tell much difference between this cartridge and an older AT-120 (replaced by the VM530)

 But that is true with the installation of ANY new cartridge  Once the cartridge is properly mounted to the headshell and the headshell is mounted to the tonearm, you need to set the tracking force to the recommended amount. In the case of the newer AT cartridges it is 1.8 - 2.2 grams

Step up from my at-120eb cartridge

I don't write many reviews, but I felt compelled to write one after trying out this cartridge. I have a vintage Marantz 6200 turntable and had a Shure cartridge on it. I replaced the Shure with the VM540ML and it's a night and day difference. I'm not going to attempt to use fancy "audiophile" verbiage, but I will say my records have a much fuller and more dynamic sound

These speakers were very difficult to find in the US as they were primarily marketed in Asia. The setup provides a very engaging sound that makes you tap your foot along to the music.

JBL Synthesis System, a dream come true

 I settled on mounting the MP-110 on the Audio Technica AT-LP1240, and its VTA is as versatile as they come. On the AT-LP1240, it’s at approximately 85% of its peak height. This took a ton of trial and error and was a complete pain, as you would expect. Finally, this cart can be a bit edgy on the treble, especially with female artists, but I think it’s more closely associated with a proper VTA setting than anything else

I’ve been using this cartridge for almost two months now and I can happily report that this is a great cartridge, especially considering its cost. I have broken it in using a combination of three different turntables, three different phono preamps, and three different integrated amps.  This is the gear I’ve used:  Turntables: Audio Technica AT-LP1240 U-Turn Orbit Teac TN-550  Phono Preamps: Parks Audio Budgie Tube Phono Preamp U-Turn Pluto Phono Preamp Cambridge CP2 Phono Preamp  Integrated Amps: Outlaw Audio RR2150 NAD c352 Kenwood KA-7300  In addition, these are the cartridges I own and used for comparison: Ortofon 2M Bronze ($440) Ortofon 2M Red ($100) Grado Prestige Gold ($260) Audio Technica AT95E ($45) Audio Technica AT440MLb ($200)  And yes, I have tried every single combination of the components – and yes, it took forever (months). Overall, I would consider the Nagaoka MP-110 my second favorite cartridge of the six I own regardless of price – second only to the Ortofon Bronze, which costs $300 more

 The Nagaoka produces a very pleasant sound, and for every genre of music I threw at it. In addition, it handles surface noise as well as a cartridge possibly can, in my opinion. The MP-110 tends to handle older records and/or poor vinyl pressings very well. It’s also a solid tracker

 There is such a spectrum of price points, that I thought going for lower of the middle of the pack would yield good results, and I am pleased so far. Although I have had great luck with the Grado Blacks I have used in the past and was considering getiing a Grado Green or Blue, this cartridge was a decent purchase for the price, and really seems to be a good value. I'm sure there is more breaking-in to do, but right away I was happy with the tracking, clarity, and stereo separation. I'm just listing to records, not back queuing or scratching, so this seems like a decent choice for quality while being able to save some $$ to buy more records :)

Great Investment For The Price

The Nagaoka is a mellow sounding cartridge with a forward, slightly harsh, midrange, significant midbass hump (but rolled-off deep bass), and slightly harsh highs. The sound is definitely not flat, and the exaggeration of certain frequency while muting of others makes it sound quite colored. However, at low volume levels, is more listenable than other, more accurate $100 cartridges such as the Shure M97, or the 2Mred. If you like accurate sound, this is not it

 Mating it with the correct phono stage is important. Some phono stages, like the Emotiva, also have a slightly forward midrange and would not mate with the Nagaoka. However, more restrained phono stages, such as Pro-Jects or Schiit Mani would be a good match.
