Audio Technica ATH-M50x vs Sennheiser HD 800 S

(score: 90/100 points) Pros –It does a variety of tasks really good with no real weakness at anything. It’s best for listening enjoyment…not professional studio monitoring as advertised. It has very warm sounding vocals, a balanced sound (with very slight favor to lower mid range & upper bass), and comfortable (loose) fit on my ears/head. It handles thick, polyphonic music passages with ease without distortion…while keeping the main melody/vocals volume and tone quality still cutting through with warmth

As mentioned above, these are an investment into your listening experience and the price shouldn't be driving you away. I gave "Comfort" a 4 star rating, as the drivers are quite large and extend way beyond the circumference of the ears (don't let this be your deciding factor, as sound quality is stellar). I might want to add, the "drivers" do not have a sealed backing, and those in your listening environment will hear them easily a higher volume levels.

They are a bit muted in the sound signature which can make them less fatiguing than other, more analytical, headphones. Mids - A bit to high level for me, it tended to make punk rock music sound very close and muddied Lows - A bit boomy but very spacious Audio Technica ATH M-50x Highs - Quite good representation, a bit cold though Mids - Nothing special, no major issues though Lows - Too over-emphasized -----------------Comfort--------------- Beyerdynamic DT 770 - Winner Perfect. I think that they all sound good with these, and the Scarlett Solo is the USB-powered amp that I mentioned above that I find more comfortable to listen to. I've contemplated getting a more expensive headphone DAC/amp to try with these, but I haven't found one yet that is universally praised (including Sennheiser's own HDVD800, which seems to be a great amp for these but with a so-so DAC). (*) Conclusion I do like these, but they are one of the rare purchases that I partially regret having made. It's not just the cost of them, but that's part of it

No scratches, no loosened parts, no cracks, NOTHING. These are SOLID. If you were to choose one last pair of headphones and head out to Narnia where you won't be buying any new ones any time soon, these would be the ones. The ear pads are large, however may interfere if you wear glasses. Remember, this is a headphone for the years to come. People spend $1,500+ on computers that get outdated after a while with a huge price depreciation. 5+ yrs from now these cans will still be worth $1,000+ used as the resale value is incredibly high
