I bought this cartridge to replace an old Ortofon cartridge from the 80s that came with my used turntable. The old Ortofon had a warm, gooey, bassy sound and it was absolutely fantastic! Unfortunately, the stylus was just about done, and replacements are no longer available. And I didn't have the money for a nice new cartridge, so budget Audio Technica it had to be.  I'm not a huge fan of the bright Audio Technica sound, but the VM95C is really honestly not bad

 Great seat travel extension without the sibilance, natural sounding with beautiful harmonics and tonal inflections, moving vocals, great details, great dynamics and good bass performance. You rest easy in your seats, ears soothed, thoroughly enjoying the performance, feeling both the subtleties and power in equal abundance. Top marks for the grado black. Again as I elicited in my previous video for the excellent gold ring elan, I rate these two cards, the grado black and the gold ring elan, joints top because if you were to ask me to keep one and sell off the other four, I cannot make up my mind between the two of them

 And the grado black bass performance is much much better than the Audio Technica 100E, the Otophone OM-5E and the Sumiko Oyster. Double bass pluck, body resonance and decay are well portrayed, satisfying and clear. Synthesized bass beats are crisp, hard-hitting and dynamic. The grado black matches the Audio Technica 80100E for high frequency extension and detail but crucially without the sibilance

 I would like to keep both. To me, they are joints winners in group A, clearly and convincingly much better than the Audio Technica AT100E, the Otophone OM5E and the Sumiko Oyster. Thank you friends.  However, if you enjoy high frequencies as part of your listening experience, this might not be the right cart for you. Personally I've enjoyed hearing mid range instrumentation that I haven't noticed before which is why I wanted to experiment with this cart. I also installed on a turntable powered by a tube preamp. Since tubes aren't known for their bass response, I thought a cart that focused on mid and low range would help make up some lost ground

I bought this for $80, specifically to see how a budget cartridge would sound. If you've installed a new cartridge before, I found this one easy to install and align. I have NOT had any hum issues as reported in some of the older reviews.  The first thing I noticed was Grado's focus on the mid and low range frequencies
