. used SL-1200 or new AT-LP120-USB? I don't plan on blowing this TT up, so I'm happy I chose the latter.

*Update* Sept. 20, 2012: After using this product almost daily for a couple months, I have noticed some issues worth mentioning. The spring-loaded pins in the tonearm sometimes get stuck, so when swapping headshells, one channel cannot be heard. I've been lucky that the toothpick in a standard swiss army knife is enough to fix it

With that power connector, USB port, and output level switch on the back panel, it would have been nice if they had also included RCA jacks on the back panel, too, rather than a permanent cable coming out of the base, but hey, cables-out-the-base seems to be a "thing".

 The spring-loaded pins in the tonearm sometimes get stuck, so when swapping headshells, one channel cannot be heard. I've been lucky that the toothpick in a standard swiss army knife is enough to fix it. Poking the stuck pin dislodges it and the spring pushes it back out. Fortunately no tonearm disassembly or replacement necessary! Kind of annoying and disconcerting, though

 So, as you can see, all of these turntables all try and find a particular niche somewhere they can sell their turntables from and because of that, as the old saying goes, you pays your money and it takes your choice literally in this case, for a 250 pounds. Turntable which compromise appeals mostly to you, do you want a hardcore, audiophile type 10 table as offered by rieger, or do you want a more feature-laden, rather friendly approach to turn table design? Well, if you do want the features - and you want that rather friendlier approach, then my personal choice to fill that particular slot is the audio technica 120 x for the price for 250 pounds. The 120x offers a superb blend of features and sound quality, and i don't hesitate at all in recommending it to you and that's it folks.  It'S lost a couple of kilograms from the previous model, for example, and the included atvm 95e cartridge will die a terrible death if you wanted to use it for scratching. The motor has also been reduced in torque, which may hamper dj related performance, but this is actually a good thing in basic sonic terms: the higher the torque, the more energy a motor will insert into the platter and also the plinth and that energy. Well, it's got to go somewhere and if it's not immediately drained, then it will convert from vibration to high frequency, noise and it'll start veiling, fine detail and that's not a good thing. Hence lowering the torque is on the right lines, at any rate, so the 120x is not really a dj turntable, and what's this the rather bizarre queuing light now, if the 120x is not a dj deck, why go to the trouble of including this little light at All if you're going to include it to enhance the technics aesthetic, then why not include a traditional light design instead of a plug-in job that connects via an rca socket if the cheap and cheerful lenko l3808 can do it, then why can't the 120x and why use That blazingly stark white light, which threatened to give me an instant migraine when activated

 So, let's quickly cut to the chase, shall we and investigate those features in a little bit more depth and let's take a closer look and welcome to the closer look section for the audio technica 120x turntable. Now, as i said, there are some changes afoot on this latest iteration of the 120x, some good, some, i'm not that pleased about. So what i'll do i'll give you a quick overview of the design and my impressions of the same and then i'll give you a more formal parts, rundown just in case i miss anything out. Firstly, the 120x features a new dc servo direct drive motor, the phono amplifier has been quotes improved along with the area around the base of the tone arm

 This is a bigger, heavier, more expensive unit. Sound quality wise, are you going to notice a big difference? I would say not. Now, you can upgrade this to the cartridge to a super high end one, and that's one of the upgrades you can do and really notice a difference if you're so inclined versus the LP-60 where you're locked in with that AT3600L cartridge, which is a beginner cartridge, but not bad. And sort of a good middle ground is the LP-3 that we've, you know, been showing a lot of that white turntable because it has some of the features of this in terms of the adjustable counterbalance, anti-skate, you know, replaceable head shell, and still has that full automatic capability

 Okay, today we're going to take another look at the Audio Technica AT-LP120 USB.

 That is one of the modern variants of the famous LP120 turntable.

 Now again, I like to take another look and sort of do a follow-up review on these turntables

 after I've had them for some time to let you know how they've performed since I first got

 Because as you can imagine, durability and really the sustainability of that product

 can't be talked about really in that first episode unless I've had one before, which

 is, you know, it's not very likely that I have.

 So we're going to kind of talk about my experiences with this turntable over the last year or

 so since I've had it, let you know what I think about it.

 I want to start off with the dust cover because I'm going to take it off because it's really

 reflective and it's hard to film with all these lights bouncing off of it.

 I'm going to see if I can zoom in a little bit here.

 So this thing is a scratch magnet and the polycarbonate that they use for these is a

 So any turntable's dust cover is going to have the same problem and that it is super

 Now you would think by looking at this that I probably stacked all kinds of sharp pointed

 things on here or whatever, but in actuality I haven't.

 I've taken record albums, I've stacked them on top, I've slid them back and forth, grabbing

 them or whatever, and that's really about it.

 Every once in a while maybe I'll put a Bluetooth speaker up here.

 Nothing major that would obviously cause scratching, but it's just testament to the fact how important

 it is if you want to keep yours in pristine condition is to not ever, ever, ever, ever

 So with that being said, let me take my dust cover off and we'll take a further look.

 Now obviously you can tell something's missing here.

 So this is the head shell it comes with.

 I don't have a cart mounted to it right now.

 It doesn't use a typical half inch mount, so it's super easy to mount a new cartridge

 or upgrade it, but I'm going to cheat a little bit and use my Ortofon DJ.

 They're really for DJing, but they work great as a cartridge and head shell all in one.

 And then obviously you need to set the appropriate tracking force, which I will do.

 So it's made by Handpin Turntables of China, just like Crosley, Audio Technica is a marketer

 and reseller of turntables, not a manufacturer.
