This type of toebox space is great for helping to build the musculature in the sole of the foot and toes, which can aid in the healing of foot and toe issues. The upper offers breathability for hot days and dries quickly after a good dunk in a cool stream. This new iteration has an updated eyelet pattern, which allows this naturally wide shoe to be cinched to fit narrower feet. It hosts a 0mm drop, meaning this doesn't have additional support or cushioning in the heel. It is best for those that intend to strike the ground with the forefoot and not the heel. Altra has increased the durability of these shoes in the recent past, and it shows. It's our favorite for longer distances and the one we choose when there's a long fast pack or training day ahead. 
While we love this shoe, it's not for everybody. The zero-drop design takes some training to get used to. Since there is no extra cushioning in the heel to lift it, the rear chain of muscles in your body will have to work quite a bit harder, and you may feel a bit of strain on the Achilles tendon. With proper training, this can wane, but if you are new to the zero-drop game, this might not be the shoe you can buy and start running long distances in immediately. But for those seeking a cushioned, well-protected, and wide trail running shoe that gives you room to spread your toes, here it is.

If you’re among the myriad trail runners who suffer from the pressure points, hot spots, and blisters resulting from ill-fitting shoes, this one’s for you. Popularized by the barefoot running movement, Altra’s zero-drop Lone Peak is arguably the most ergonomic and comfortable trail runner on the market. With a flat footbed and extra roomy toe box, the Lone Peak allows the foot to stay in its naturally flat and splayed position, which is great news for wide-footed runners or those with particularly finicky feet. We’ve recommended this shoe to dozens of friends and acquaintances who’ve struck out with more traditional shoes (including wide versions of models like the Hoka Speedgoat), and have yet to lead anyone astray.

The new Lone Peak 6 doesn’t venture far from previous models, but it does feature an updated upper and new lacing system for a more secure fit. This is good news for those with low-profile feet: Previous versions of the Lone Peak have been critiqued for being too roomy and thus unstable on rocky and rooty terrain. And true to its trail-worthy intentions, the Altra also features a rock plate, gaiter attachments, and drain ports both on the toe box and inside of the foot. **Altra Lone Peak 5:**  I had the 3.5 for years and loved them, but I finally upgraded last month.  I had to size down half a size.  I don’t know if that’s because of some changes to the shoe itself or because stuffing my feet into climbing shoes has shrunk my feet

  The shoes were still a bit looser than I would have liked, and I ended up with blisters on the outsides of each big toe.  I really only run into issues with the shoes on rocky downhills where my feet may slip off of rocks.  I don’t know if it feels sloppy because of the width or because of some feature of the shoe.  The traction is still decent and aside from the fit, it’s everything I want in a shoe

  I usually get a couple of years out of my shoes, so I'm concerned about durability of the A.L.P. 6 

Oh, by the way, they do look goofy with the WIDE toe-box area, but that's how some feet are made. I'll take comfort over fashion any day. 4 stars

 However, the tradeoff is that my feet do NOT ache at the end of the day of wearing the A.L.P. 6

Comfortable for WIDE feet

	Compared to the Ultraventure 1, the MTN Racer is a bit lighter, firmer, and fits more snugly in the toes and midfoot while heel fit is the same. Users have been advised to size up half a size for the MTN Racer if they wish to have a fit similar to the Ultraventure. I felt that the Ultraventure’s cushioning sometimes bottomed out on large sharp objects, which happened to a lesser extent in the MTN Racer. I prefer the MTN Racer over the Ultraventure for the lighter weight, Megagrip outsole, and firmer cushioning

 Topo could update their EVA formula or use their new ZipFoam that they’re using in some of their other shoes like the Ultrafly 3, Cyclone, and Ultraventure Pro. Another area of improvement is weight.

 Topo could update the upper with what they’re using for the Runventure 3 or with the Engineered mesh from their road shoes and newer Ultraventure 2. I thought the midsole flattened a bit early compared to say Brooks’ BioMoGo used in their Caldera. Topo could update their EVA formula or use their new ZipFoam that they’re using in some of their other shoes like the Ultrafly 3, Cyclone, and Ultraventure Pro. Another area of improvement is weight

 They are not waterproof and do allow airflow. But not nearly enough, especially when compared to the material found on the Altra Riveria Street or Topo Terraventure 3. 

Hot feet

I've been fine with older versions of Altra Lone Peak mids (waterproof and windproof), for cold and dry conditions Altra Olympus (high stack insulates well from the cold, but surprisingly airy uppers). Do like my sandals too though.

I've been backpacking in zero drop minimalist shoes for the last 8 years but have never done any serious backpacking or hiking in the winter snow. I'm moving to SLC and want to start enjoying the wilderness in the winter but also be safe about my feet. I really don't like wearing boots (or shoes)  with an elevated heel or much structure but I realize I will probably need that for snowshoes and not getting wet and frostbite!
I've backpacked in VFFs, bedrock sandals in shoulder seasons so I have robust feet,  but that was in the Appalachian's. Please send me some recommendations!

Recommend me some zero or low drop winter backpacking/hiking boots for snow. (I don't like wearing shoes but I know I'll need them!)

I don’t care about waterproofness. Feet sweat and get wet. I just need them to dry when I take them off

 I tried a size 14 in these but sizing up made the shoe too wide and the toe box was so large my feet were moving side to side. Even doubling socks didn’t help - I also hate doing that.

A specific thing I love is the laces. They're textured and therefor don't require tight knots to keep in place. 

I really like the aesthetic look as well, the green ones, which I have, have a  topographical pattern which is super neat. They also just hold their shape better, if that makes sense. 

Anyways, since I only recently got the 6's and have used them on maybe 25-30 miles of trail so far, all I can say is they are COMFORTABLE. Usually I go through a love/hate period with Altra's where they don't fit right or I have to replace them into different patterns to get them right. But the 6's felt perfect from the moment I wore them. 

Great shoes with minimal changes from past success

, but I would have hoped the design of these shoes would have prevented that.  Durability--after two weeks including the admittedly hard use on the trail for three days, some of the plasticized outside "skeleton" had already started peeling away from the mesh.  I brought my pair in and the salesperson said that was unusual, so I exchanged them for an identical pair.  I hope these ones do better

 I contacted the company and inquired about a warranty. They worked with me and I had a replacement shipped super fast! It was an amazing experience, I’d order again in a heartbeat.

The Saucony Xodus 10 & 11 are also trail running shoes but these have nice cushy pebax midsoles but at the same time are very robust.

I’m a slow running heavyset heel striker (7:30/km and 115kg). I run mostly on roads or footpath. 

I’ve been using the Brooks Glycerin which has been great for cushioning but a little bit unstable for me. Prior to that I had the Brooks Adrenaline GTS which was vice-versa. 

I’m considering the new Glycerin (said to now have the Aurora midsole) or maybe a Nike Invincible or whatever New Balance can offer?
Suggestions welcome!

Recommend me a shoe

 And they do also have that gay there attachment just at the toe. So if you do want to utilize a Gator into this, you can just hook it onto that four foot very cushioned shoe, especially if you're doing those long miles if you want to. kind of that high Christian traveling shoe, this works great as well because they are built as a running shoe for those higher mileage, higher cushion and it's just a neutral shoe as well so it's going to absorb any terrain you go over. Any part of that she will just absorb it nicely and you're just not going to get off kilter and kind of lose your balance

 actually a better shoe. So if you do one that high cushioned homage trainer that actually does have a good bit of group, it doesn't matter if you're going uphill or downhill. usually if you go up, you've got to come down. So this does work right in that regard

 Surco knees Been using quite a lot of those Us twelves and I actually did feel quite snug in these, even in a size 12. So if you are wearing that thicker sock or even suggest going a half-size up, especially if you are in those colder climates, just have a few more layers on. They definitely try it on. It runs either that true to size or even take a half size up

 So moving on to your mid style. This is probably a massive chain, so everyone's been discontinued and then moved on to that parent class. So the midsole itself is 25% lighter and it's still using that thermoplastic bead, but it is just a bit softer underneath the foot. It's all that kind of bit more flexible with lighter and all that kind of good words from Midsole: Veron Plus, it's not going to get affected by that heat or cold

 so it's definitely super cushion like an Ultra. And of course, like many of the Hocus even though it's considerably heavier than the speed go, it seems to run this harder surfaces far far better and it does have a lot of nice soft bounce. so this is going to be a big ultra contender in addition to kind of a recovery shoe, a door to trail, and even probably a fast tiger. So Sockin is really doing some neat things here

 that also contributes to the weight drop, as does the new Power Run plus midsole which is also in the Triumph and it said by Saucony to be 25% lighter then ever run and with eight percent better shock absorbing qualities. And it sure felt that because I've always felt ever run was kind of a dead dull material. and here we get it light and bounce here. So much more to come as the rest of our crew tests the shoe on dirt and more snow
