The absolute BIGGEST problem I’ve been having is the mic picking up all this rasp and throaty qualities and I’m dying to cut that out in some way (especially the raspiness), whether it be mic placement, setting levels differently or any kind of plugins (I record with Cubase)Might I add, Id rather not, and I try not to do too much to any tracks I record outside of a little eq, as I don’t mix and master myself. I typically record all instrumental tracks at home and then bring the stems into a studio to record the vocals and have it all mastered there. Of course, I never hear much raspiness in the monitoring or finals takes at the studios.

I pretty much exclusively go direct line in for keyboards and mics, just find good levels before recording to get it sounding good at the source,, don’t know what else i’d really do? 
       So anyways, as I’ve been trying to record with the C414 and it seems to only bring out the worst qualities in my voice. It’s been a struggle to find the right levels off the bat, either it’s too quiet or it picks up too much, and of course I’ve tried all kinds of different variations with the bass cut filter and the preattenuation pad.

How to get a clean/clear vocal recording?

 The c214 won't disappoint if you know what you want out of the mic and knowing how to utilize it's axis for that sound you want.

 I prefer the rode nt2a since it offers bang for buck. Not the best but is a great overall mic. The c214 won't disappoint if you know what you want out of the mic and knowing how to utilize it's axis for that sound you want.

 If someone told you this is basically a c414 but a cardioid version then they haven't actually mic a/b test the two and most likely gave their opinion due to it looking strikingly similar. Now it doesn't mean this is bad or terrible, it is actually quite friendly since it gives out articulation to speech while not being harsh. Will it work on all voices, no it will not. Before you head out to buy any microphone, you should find out what is your tonal range and how your voice actually is rather than what you want it to be

 They're not cheap the KM-84s the original KM-84s aren't going to be cheap because guys that have them have had them a long time and they know the value of these things and they know what they can do to records and they know what they can actually do their songs just by having them in their arsenal. Same goes with the 85s however it seems to be that you do see the KM-85 sitting around you've got to find their KM-85s cheaper. So basically the KM-85 was designed to reduce the proximity effect it has the low roll off about 12 db at 50 hertz probably wouldn't want to get up too close to these things. The KM-85s were designed for the outside speaking so the low rumble that would come with the wind and stuff like that the reason they made these and they put the roll off into the into the capsule was just to take that eliminate that issue instead of designing a whole new microphone they just did it in the capsule and basically shipped them out to the people that wanted them

 So for people that want to buy a KM-84 an original one you're going to have to do a little bit searching because there's you know a lot of guys don't let these go unless they're folding up their studios or these things break and they're irreparable. They're relatively hard to find so you've got to be lucky you've got to be on the lookout and if you're the right time to buy jump on these things. They're not cheap the KM-84s the original KM-84s aren't going to be cheap because guys that have them have had them a long time and they know the value of these things and they know what they can do to records and they know what they can actually do their songs just by having them in their arsenal. Same goes with the 85s however it seems to be that you do see the KM-85 sitting around you've got to find their KM-85s cheaper

 A lot of orchestral pieces will have these guys sitting on them. They're also really really good and they're world-class actually a lot of guys will argue the fact that these are the best drum overheads of all. So if you have these guys hanging around put them to use because they're actually a phenomenal microphone. They have an interchangeable capsule you know nothing too fancy really
