The absolute BIGGEST problem I’ve been having is the mic picking up all this rasp and throaty qualities and I’m dying to cut that out in some way (especially the raspiness), whether it be mic placement, setting levels differently or any kind of plugins (I record with Cubase)Might I add, Id rather not, and I try not to do too much to any tracks I record outside of a little eq, as I don’t mix and master myself. I typically record all instrumental tracks at home and then bring the stems into a studio to record the vocals and have it all mastered there. Of course, I never hear much raspiness in the monitoring or finals takes at the studios.

       So I just picked up the AKG C414 XLII for recording some vocals at home. I run directly into a Scarlett 18i20 interface. Pretty unexperienced with most technical stuff. I pretty much exclusively go direct line in for keyboards and mics, just find good levels before recording to get it sounding good at the source,, don’t know what else i’d really do? 
       So anyways, as I’ve been trying to record with the C414 and it seems to only bring out the worst qualities in my voice. It’s been a struggle to find the right levels off the bat, either it’s too quiet or it picks up too much, and of course I’ve tried all kinds of different variations with the bass cut filter and the preattenuation pad.

How to get a clean/clear vocal recording?

 The c214 won't disappoint if you know what you want out of the mic and knowing how to utilize it's axis for that sound you want.

 I prefer the rode nt2a since it offers bang for buck. Not the best but is a great overall mic. The c214 won't disappoint if you know what you want out of the mic and knowing how to utilize it's axis for that sound you want.

 If someone told you this is basically a c414 but a cardioid version then they haven't actually mic a/b test the two and most likely gave their opinion due to it looking strikingly similar. Now it doesn't mean this is bad or terrible, it is actually quite friendly since it gives out articulation to speech while not being harsh. Will it work on all voices, no it will not. Before you head out to buy any microphone, you should find out what is your tonal range and how your voice actually is rather than what you want it to be

 So I wanted to do this simple with no processing what's over, so you get to hear the true sound of the MXL 990, and so it takes the pressure off needing to use your mics that you normally use in your studio that are kept, you know, very protected. So you could throw these outside and not worry about it if the wind gets to it or using it by the ocean. Relatively low risk. If something happens to it, you could easily replace it

 I'm not in a treated room, so you're probably hearing a little of the room noise as well, and I'm getting the audio straight into my iPhone and just pressing record, so I have it going into a mixer board, and my mixer board has a USB out. Then the USB is just going into adapter that then is going into my iPhone. So I wanted to do this simple with no processing what's over, so you get to hear the true sound of the MXL 990, and so it takes the pressure off needing to use your mics that you normally use in your studio that are kept, you know, very protected. So you could throw these outside and not worry about it if the wind gets to it or using it by the ocean

 So I'm here at my Yamaha C7, where I have the two MXL microphones, one on the treble and one on the bass, and it's going into my 15 year old mixer. So the two MXLs are right here, channel one and channel two. Let's try out the piano. So it sounds really great

 For those working out of the home studio spend at least $300 in soundproofing getting good acoustic foam bass traps for the corners to really soundproof your recording space. But that isn't enough! The other must have is a microphone that has low self noise. I happen to know for a fact this microphone has a high self noise rate. If you are someone looking to record audio books or medical narration for example that is a real problem considering those don't have music so you only hear voice and voice only

 This mic does not. A good rule of thumb is if the advertisement for the microphone doesn't mention low self noise the mic likely doesn't have it. Amazing mic for the money x3

 I guess that bar is getting just continually a little bit higher. But despite the somewhat nitpicky nature of this review, I do want to start off by saying, this is a very good mic. I think it's better than 90% of the offerings in this price range, and I prefer it to many of the competitors like the AT2020 or the Samson C01, maybe the Behringer B1. So bear that in mind, while I am pretty critical of this microphone, I think it's more based on the fact that I've seen so many glowing reviews of this mic

 That's the thing I wanted to do with this review. I saw so many reviews of this microphone just talking about how it's the perfect alternative to even more expensive microphones, and I just don't think that's true. It's a more honest review of this microphone. It's a more critical review of this microphone, but it's still a good microphone

 When we look at the 103 frequency response, we see this dead flat sort of plateau in the high end. In my opinion, this dead straight shelf, when combined with a really beautiful flat control of the mid-range, that's kind of the Neumann tone if you could dilute it down to a frequency response curve. In this aspect, the MXL990 begins to fall short, so the presence boost is noticeably less shelf-like, meaning there isn't this sort of consistent, almost compressive quality to the high end. It's sort of what you would expect from a mildly bright, mildly mid-range focused microphone

 Perhaps one of the reasons that this microphone is held in such high regard are its subtle allusions to a microphone much more expensive than itself, that being the Neumann TLM103. The silver, greenish, champagne hue of this microphone harkens back to vintage Neumanns. Its form factor is very reminiscent of a TLM103, and it's not uncommon to see in the comments, or in the Discord, which you should go join, that this is the budget TLM103. You know, in this microphone's marketing, when you go on the website, there's a lot of buzzwords that they like to throw around to make it sound fancy
