 Upon doing this all hdr modes became greyed out as well as the vrr, and 1440p was still not there but 1080p. I now set the monitor to manually detect hdmi instead of the auto detect mode. It puts the monitor In 680x480 automatically but you can get out of it by changing the display resolution. Available display options were now:

 Keep in mind that using adaptive sync will need an fps cap below the maximum refresh rate. This ensures that the frame rate always stays inside the adaptive sync window. How much you will have to kept below 165hz will vary across different games and fps limiters with valorant. For instance, i needed to cap at 156 fps to get rid of any tearing now

 The lightning can be controlled through the armor command center that installed automatically after connecting the 27i to my pc, i'm not sure whether to call that practical or encroaching anyways. This software gives access to all the rgb colors and even some color changing effects, and if you ever feel the need to read a good book on a monitor, the omen has got you covered as well. I honestly don't know if this light has an intention other than being a design feature, but it could actually be somewhat useful as a reading light or if your keyboard isn't backlit. Another gimmick is the headphone stand, or at least what hp thinks could be used as a headphone stand

 There is just as guilty as well at a refresh rate of 144hz. Things are very similar to 165hz, though the overshoot is stronger at lower overdrive levels, it's already too strong at level 3. So level 2 is the best choice here now. The performance at 144 hertz can also be important when using the omen at 165 hertz with the depth of sync

 Now I don't know if it's just because the refresh rate is a little higher or if it actually is blurry a little. Is there a fix for this or anything like that?

Simple Questions - March 09, 2022

As the creator of the scanline thread recently, I have a few thoughts on the Odyssey. After finally switching to a HP Omen 27i, I’ve had a chance to closely compare my new monitor with my experiences of the Samsung. First of all, the Samsung Odyssey G7 27” is MASSIVE, when I opened the HP monitor, I thought they accidentally packacked a 24” version. I guess it’s the Samsung’s curvature and stand

In my opinion, the Samsung’s curvature increased immersion and it never annoyed me under any circumstance. The whole monitor looks awesome, a real spacecraft

Let me start by saying that i had all of the Odyssey variants and i can confidently say that what i am about to write down applies to all of them.

Right now i am using the 32 Inch version and here is the good and the bad i am experiencing with the latest firmware version applied.

**System:** 3800X (4500Mhz) + 2080Ti (1920/7800Mhz at max load)

**1) Response Times**

You can trust the hype here. Samsung somehow managed to get rid of **ALMOST** all the black smear across all the Hz ranges, without the need of a dedicated G-Sync module.

**2) Uniformity**

Well, its a lottery. Mine sadly shows a bit of leakage at the bottom center. Its a bit annoying, especially in HDR mode, where the backlight has to go full blast (see point 6 of my review).

I am not sure if i am gonna return it because of that. Honestly, i am burned out, cant take the RMA BS anymore and have to start fighting over a 6900XT soon.

**3) Scanline issues**

I have them. Especially in the top left and top right corner when bright blue and orange colours are shown. You can easily check for them when using the RTSS overlay at default colour scheme. If you sit further away from your monitor, you cant make them out anymore (similarly to CRTs). They literally disappear for my eyes, when i am going back 20cm, from where i am usually sitting, which is directly in front of the monitor, to get immersed in my games (around 40cm).

Sometimes i can make the scanlines appear even at the center of the screen, for example when having the Star Citizen client open. I can't figure out what is causing the problem here, hopefully someone smarter than me can give us a hint here, its not reproducible outside of the corners i mentioned, tho.

**4) G-Sync compatible (aka Freesync on Nvidia cards)**

Everyone probably heard about the VRR flickering. I have it too but not in every application.

For example, the official "pendulum demo" does **NOT** show any form of flickering anymore. The reason for that is probably the buttery smooth frametime of the demo, the shift between 40 and 60fps occurs very slowly. 

Also, in older games (or easy to run games), where i can maintain 90+ fps easily, there are no issues i can see anymore.

Almost unplayable are games with bad frametimes, that are not optimised. Star Citizen is one of those games. It has bad overall FPS, combined with frametimes that are all over the place (1% min of 5fps, average around 50-60 on my system). The monitor goes haywire here, it is impossible to use. Low frame rate compensation tries to keep up, but cant.

In those worst case scenarios you can activate a newly introduced option called "VRR control". I am not technical enough to see what exactly is going on here but to me it seem that it skips those aforementioned "bad 1% lows" that would normally cause the LFC to go haywire. The downside of this option is, that you will experience small micro stutters, but the flickering is definitely gone, even when playing the worst case scenario like Star Citizen.

**So in conclusion: The problem seems to be a combination of bad frametimes + LFC range trying to keep up with them. I hope to get a NAVI card within my return window, so i can see if the monitor works better on a "dedicated" freesync card, where LFC traditionally starts to kick in later, compared to Nvidia's implementation. This point COULD be the reason why reports about this issue are ALL over the place.**

**5) Colours**

Very good, see reviews of trustworthy sources here, as i am not a picture/video professional. Let me just say that even tho the colours are bright and intense, the Reddit logo for example is still shown in a perfectly orange colour and not over saturated with a red tint.

**6) HDR**

It is surprisingly usable. There is a reason [Rtings.com](https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/samsung/odyssey-g7) gave it almost a 8. It is the first time that i have seen an HDR game acknowledge my "HDR" monitor as such, without me having to activate it first in windows settings. I can start games like ME:Andromeda and it will automatically switch HDR on (in windows and on my monitor). This made me happy, not gonna lie.

When HDR is active you can still adjust settings like brightness, only the Gamma preset was locked for me. Adjusting brightness is pointless tho because anything outside 95-100 is not bright enough anymore to sustain HDR.

Because of the nature of VA, you don't get Glow/Bleed go completely haywire, like you would see on IPS panels without FALD. Remember, this is an overexposed picture i took at 100 brightness. Imagine this on an IPS without FALD...

I wish i would have less glow coming from the bottom center of the screen. HDR is definetly a plus on the Odyssey and i would go so far and say that its the best choice rightnow, outside of the FALD range of monitors (and TVs obviously).

**7) Curve**

I was not a fan of it when i first had the 27 Inch G7 but on the G9 and the 32 Inch G7, the curve immerses you, especially if you are someone who sits close to the screen, like i do (40cm). First time i started ME:Andromeda on the 32 G7, i got overwhelmed. Can't remember last time a monitor did that to me, especially in the sub 700€ range.

**8) RGB**

Well, i'll keep short here. It is not worth mentioning, it's not even bright enough to make any difference in a pitch black room.

**9) Pixel Density (PPI at 32 Inch)**

PPI is the same as 48Inch/4K (LG CX) or 24Inch/1080p (competitive monitor). To be honest, in games with weak implementation of Anti Aliasing (AA), i can see some shimmering edges. Definitely more than on my 27/1440p monitors but in games with good implementation of AA, its not an issue for me.

Well, its a lottery. Mine sadly shows a bit of leakage at the bottom center. Its a bit annoying, especially in HDR mode, where the backlight has to go full blast (see point 6 of my review).

I am not sure if i am gonna return it because of that. Honestly, i am burned out, cant take the RMA BS anymore and have to start fighting over a 6900XT soon.

3) Scanline issues

I have them. Especially in the top left and top right corner when bright blue and orange colours are shown. You can easily check for them when using the RTSS overlay at default colour scheme. If you sit further away from your monitor, you cant make them out anymore (similarly to CRTs). They literally disappear for my eyes, when i am going back 20cm, from where i am usually sitting, which is directly in front of the monitor, to get immersed in my games (around 40cm).

Sometimes i can make the scanlines appear even at the center of the screen, for example when having the Star Citizen client open. I can&#39;t figure out what is causing the problem here, hopefully someone smarter than me can give us a hint here, its not reproducible outside of the corners i mentioned, tho.

4) G-Sync compatible (aka Freesync on Nvidia cards)

Everyone probably heard about the VRR flickering. I have it too but not in every application.

For example, the official &quot;pendulum demo&quot; does NOT show any form of flickering anymore. The reason for that is probably the buttery smooth frametime of the demo, the shift between 40 and 60fps occurs very slowly.

Also, in older games (or easy to run games), where i can maintain 90+ fps easily, there are no issues i can see anymore.

Almost unplayable are games with bad frametimes, that are not optimised. Star Citizen is one of those games. It has bad overall FPS, combined with frametimes that are all over the place (1% min of 5fps, average around 50-60 on my system). The monitor goes haywire here, it is impossible to use. Low frame rate compensation tries to keep up, but cant.

In those worst case scenarios you can activate a newly introduced option called &quot;VRR control&quot;. I am not technical enough to see what exactly is going on here but to me it seem that it skips those aforementioned &quot;bad 1% lows&quot; that would normally cause the LFC to go haywire. The downside of this option is, that you will experience small micro stutters, but the flickering is definitely gone, even when playing the worst case scenario like Star Citizen.

So in conclusion: The problem seems to be a combination of bad frametimes + LFC range trying to keep up with them. I hope to get a NAVI card within my return window, so i can see if the monitor works better on a &quot;dedicated&quot; freesync card, where LFC traditionally starts to kick in later, compared to Nvidia&#39;s implementation. This point COULD be the reason why reports about this issue are ALL over the place.

5) Colours

Very good, see reviews of trustworthy sources here, as i am not a picture/video professional. Let me just say that even tho the colours are bright and intense, the Reddit logo for example is still shown in a perfectly orange colour and not over saturated with a red tint.

6) HDR

It is surprisingly usable. There is a reason <a href="https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/samsung/odyssey-g7">Rtings.com</a> gave it almost a 8. It is the first time that i have seen an HDR game acknowledge my &quot;HDR&quot; monitor as such, without me having to activate it first in windows settings. I can start games like ME:Andromeda and it will automatically switch HDR on (in windows and on my monitor). This made me happy, not gonna lie.

When HDR is active you can still adjust settings like brightness, only the Gamma preset was locked for me. Adjusting brightness is pointless tho because anything outside 95-100 is not bright enough anymore to sustain HDR.

Because of the nature of VA, you don&#39;t get Glow/Bleed go completely haywire, like you would see on IPS panels without FALD. Remember, this is an overexposed picture i took at 100 brightness. Imagine this on an IPS without FALD...

I wish i would have less glow coming from the bottom center of the screen. HDR is definetly a plus on the Odyssey and i would go so far and say that its the best choice rightnow, outside of the FALD range of monitors (and TVs obviously).

7) Curve

I was not a fan of it when i first had the 27 Inch G7 but on the G9 and the 32 Inch G7, the curve immerses you, especially if you are someone who sits close to the screen, like i do (40cm). First time i started ME:Andromeda on the 32 G7, i got overwhelmed. Can&#39;t remember last time a monitor did that to me, especially in the sub 700€ range.

8) RGB

Well, i&#39;ll keep short here. It is not worth mentioning, it&#39;s not even bright enough to make any difference in a pitch black room.

9) Pixel Density (PPI at 32 Inch)

PPI is the same as 48Inch/4K (LG CX) or 24Inch/1080p (competitive monitor). To be honest, in games with weak implementation of Anti Aliasing (AA), i can see some shimmering edges. Definitely more than on my 27/1440p monitors but in games with good implementation of AA, its not an issue for me.

My take on the latest Odyssey G7/G9 controversy (A final review)

 The omen 27i had more moderate, acceptable bleed which is normal and considering right now it’s 100 dollars cheaper it’s the better value considering it almost being the same. Altough I switched to the new Odyssey G7 and have no regrets (mainly due to the fact I’m in a dark room and I couldn’t stand the low contrast and grey blacks from ips panels) I would reccomend the hp, would definitely buy again if needed!

After a lot of debate, seeing monitors in person, reading this subreddit, and obsessively poring over TftCentral and RTINGS, I'm between two monitors for my new PC build (R7 3700X + 2070S).

The two monitors are the **ViewSonic XG270QG** and the **HP Omen X 27**. (The third monitor to consider is the **Omen 27i** but there seems to be no testing available for this monitor though I'd love to hear your experiences, specifically regarding response times). If you can please refrain from recommending other monitors, I would really appreciate it. I know that there are better IPS options to the XG270QG, but for my needs / preferences, I like that one best. As far as the X 27, I don't find the Lenovo alternative interesting. I'm keeping an eye out on a G7 review from TftCentral / RTINGS, but I'm skeptical about response times. Some background on myself: I will mostly be playing eSports titles like R6:S and Overwatch at high ranked (Plat / Diamond) so my main concern is motion clarity and pushing frames but I'm also not a pro player. Beyond gaming, I will be using R and Sheets for work. Content consumption will be limited to YouTube.

I'm mostly (but not completely) indifferent about 240hz versus 144hz. Ultimately, my biggest conflict is this: Both monitors at optimal overdrives and their highest possible refresh rates have wonderfully low overshoot. However, the X 27 has a \~3ms realistic response time and the XG270QG is \~5. **Is the 2ms difference extremely noticeable and is it worth sacrificing the much better color on the ViewSonic (or the 27i)?**
