Being a fan of the Abyss house sound I tried for a few years to find something in the 'closed'back' world that would give me that sense of impact and dynamics. Unfortunately Elegia, HD820, Atticus, Argon or Aeon/Either CX could do it quite as well as an open back pair could. So, what was the solution? Move my office so that I could use open back cans.

So... how did I come to this pairing as my preferred office setup? Well, being a 1266 TC owner at home I knew what sound signature I wanted, but having tried the Diana Phi for a few days I knew that wasn't something that I wanted (It does not sound at all like the 1266 TC to my ears). I decided to go after the Diana v2. I had owned the original Diana for a while, but it never fitted my head well enough to keep long-term. Those small pads and narrow headband caused for comfort issues after about an hour of wearing. The Diana v2 fixed ALL of those issues with a slightly wider headband and MUCH larger pads. The Diana is now, at least for me, an over ear headphone. The comfort is great as well... just enough clamp force to remove the hotspot on top of the head.

The Diana v2 may not be an exact copy of the 1266 TC, it's not at all, but it does deliver in a lot of ways that made me love the TC. The detail is there, but it's not overly done. These are not trying to force you to listen to every single thing inside of a track. It does an amazing job of presenting the music to you AND allowing you to just listen and not worry about how it was recorded, or what type of mastering was done. Will it sound horrible with less quality recordings? Sure, but it's not making me want to take it off my head like the TC does. I can listen to the Diana v2 for hours and not even care about what's coming on shuffle. They allow me to appreciate the music and not worry about the recording or what happened in post.

The bass is not nearly as impactful as the TC, but that's good with me. It's fast and clean with seemingly no decay that I can hear. There's also zero bleed in to the midrange, which is really nice when you are listening to anything acoustic. In more bass focused songs like a track from DJ Shadow called 'Three Ralphs' - Those first few hits from the bass are enough to just crumble some headphones, but on the v2 it not only handles it, it's so fast that you can hear the way this digital track was filtered with the strange, almost manipulated clap track pushing forward while the bass track slides back in to the mix. No bleed and no distortion, just a fast and accurate listening experience. Mind you, this is not a great track to sit down and enjoy, but when you are coding all day, it's nice to just put on something that doesn't draw my focus away from the task at hand.

Midrange is full and lush on the v2. It reminds me a lot of the HD600 that I had for years. Forward and full is the best terminology that I can think of to describe the way it presents. For instance in the MTV unplugged 25th anniversary recording of Nirvana, the track 'Come As You Are' - Kurt's vocals, on some headphones can sound just truly awful when he starts to push his voice to breakup. The Diana v2 handles this like a champ and just pushes with him. He starts being level with the mix, all on the same field, but when he pushes his voice he comes forward and then just sneaks back in to the mix. That's a hell of a feat, as this trips up a lot of other headphones in to straight distortion.

Treble is where I believe the Diana v2 really excels over most in the 'trans-portable' type of scenario. For classical and jazz music, the Diana remains my favorite headphone for the office. In more acceptable applications, like a track from Glitch Police called, 'Hibernation'. You can hear the music blended very well in the background all while there are those beloved pops and clicks coming forward in the mix... most of which are quite high in the frequency. Again, no bleed here and no distortion, just FAST and CLEAN.

Soundstage and imaging are, in a simple phrase, class leading. I don't know what other headphones could even hope to compete here... maybe Focal Clear, Utopia possibly something like the Either 2 or even 007? Well, between those, it dominates them all. I have always found that Focal, which I love for their visceral dynamcis and slam, cannot image nearly as well as many planars. I get the typical 3 blob imaging with Focal, even the Either 2 struggles to present more than just Left, Center, Right. The 007 and other eStats do a good job, but never seem to be able to project beyond the headphones. The Diana v2 has pinpoint imaging throughout the stage, and that stage can be as wide as it was recorded. It's not a bloated stage, like the HD800(s), it's just as it should be.

Overall, the Diana v2 gets more time on my head than the 1266 TC... that's because I can just put it on and listen for hours without any fatigue. I even find myself reaching for the v2 more when I am at home simply for the ease of use over the TC.

Now, how to pair this with an amp? Well, I have tried a few. The ifi micro iDSD BL was the first thing I tried. It was fine, but I was never able to get enough play in the volume pot to really be able to adjust it more than just a hair after about 8am on the dial. The next trial was the pairing of Chord Mojo and Aune B1. Now, this was fun, as I was able to see what a little class a would do. That was a great pairing. The Mojo had LOADS of power to provide, and the B1 took that power and just calmed it the F\*\*K down. I have always found that the way Chord designs any of their devices is to just kill you with brightness and detail, and while that's good, you need to have something after that stage to just take the harshness off of it... at least for my ears. So, from there I went to the Schiit Asgard 2. That was really, really nice, but that unit just got SO FLIPPIN' HOT sitting on my desk that it made summer days in the office more complicated by the amount of sweat that was pouring off of me. Finally, and I am done now, enter the RebelAmp. I had read some good things about this amp, and I have a history with what this amp was based on. If you're at all interested just look in to the Flux line and you will see what I mean. The RebelAmp is large... about the same size as the Schiit Mjonir/Gungnir, but it's VERY light weight. That was surprising to me, as ALL of the Schiit devices are just so damn heavy. Any way... the RebelAmp is just a beautiful piece of kit, and does great things paired with the v2. It takes the areas between the notes and just fills it in to make for an even more full experience. I would highly recommend the RebelAmp for anyone that wants a little more full sounding experience, but might not want to jump in to the world of tube amps or tube rolling.

Looking back on my years in this hobby I have just thrown money at items to hear what they sound like, and only in the last year or so found what I want in a listening experience. Just got my new office combo setup this morning. I have some thoughts.... RebelAmp + Diana v2.

 The flavor of instruments is very transparent on both the PHY and the V2. Now the imaging in the soundstage, imaging, I can't really imagine it being much better, but imaging is very easy to accomplish at a substantially lower price tag. A soundstage, however, I think due to the limitations of the design themselves for both the PHY and the V2 is not super impressive. And it's not impressive in two ways

 Now for a couple of examples, the headband extension here is not a normal ball and spring system that you see on so many other headphones or any sort of tension system. It is actually completely stepped down with magnets. Now it's also small things that an outside viewer may not fully appreciate, but an owner will really love. On the inside of that extension, you'll see the Diana branding, but you'll also see a very small American flag

Abyss Diana V2 Review | Among the best headphones on the Planet.

 Before we get started, I want to thank Abyss for sending this out for a review.

 Hey what's up guys, my name is Josh and welcome to the review finally of the Diana V2.

 Now I haven't actually had this headphone for very long, but I say finally because I've

 been very very excited to talk about this headphone.

 This has quickly reached probably top two for favorite headphone of all time.

 I think this is an incredible headphone in many many ways.

 So first thing I want to briefly mention is the price.

 This is a $3,000 headphone, it's definitely not cheap, but part of the reason why it costs

 as much as it does is because a headphone like this is literally among the best headphones

 And the price is reflected not just because they set some arbitrary price, but because

 of the amount of research and development and the materials that go into this.

 Now the reason why I'm talking about the materials is because simply put, this is the best headphone

 construction you can purchase for $3,000 period.

 And it's really all because of an immense attention to certain details.

 Now for a couple of examples, the headband extension here is not a normal ball and spring

 system that you see on so many other headphones or any sort of tension system.

 Now inside the chassis, you'll find something that is very, very strange for a lot of planar

 headphones, which is going to be the actual magnet structure.

 I'm not sure if you can see it there, kind of a thin disc.

 So unlike most other planars, which use bars of magnets, kind of attached to some sort

 of chassis or frame, the V2 and the Fi, and I believe the 1266 are just one giant disc

 that gets machined lines cut through it.

 But this results in a very, very strong magnet and a very unique magnet.

 Now I do want to ask Abyss a question here.

 Everything on this headphone is, it's intentional.

 The entire build, you can tell it's intentional.

 In fact, I believe that the reason why the headphone doesn't swivel, which normally I

 would want to see, but I think the reason why they don't make it swivel is to actually

 reduce the amount of potential failing components in the system.

 So with the idea of everything being intentional, I wonder why the magnets are at a 45 degree

 Most other slots on planars are 90 degree horizontal line.

 So I'm curious if there's an actual benefit to having them in this direction.

 There probably is, but I don't know if they'd tell me why, but I'm curious about it.

 Now on the build, one of the strange things about this is that it seems like certain things

 mattered a lot to the design team, but then other things didn't matter as much.

 For example, the whole thing's overbuilt, right?

 But they didn't miss some creature comforts like the headphone swivel, like the fact that

 the pads aren't very big, they don't have a lot of padding and so they don't feel super

 They're not uncomfortable for me, but they're not a comfortable headphone by any means.
