WTB Byways

Went for a quick test ride for the new tyres and pedals. The tyres are WTB Byways in 700x44. I was pleasantly surprised by their grip on wet dirt even uphill, and they're very enjoyable on pavement. A lot more comfortable than my previous 37mm Riddlers too.

UPDATE: Just about every time I go out I get a flat what's the tiniest object like a small piece of metal or a very small thorn. I'll have to get some kind of thorn protection liner. I've got some WTB byways in 44, but they do smaller versions too - smooth central tread and knobly edges for turning grip in gravel

It's pretty okay. I've bought a pair in both 700cx40 and 650bx47. The 700c actually measures around 38mm, so they're really not as big and supple as you'd hope. Pretty nice to ride tubeless, installed without much fuss, but the problem is puncture resistance. Third ride in got a big gash in the side...

I've found the WTB Byways to be perfectly capable road+gravel tires: esp setup tubeless. Just make sure you dont do what I did and not notice the very inconspicuous directionality of the siping and put your tires on backwards like I did. EDIT: Woops.

Happy with the tread - it's exactly what I wanted for my gravel bike ridden on mixed surfaces - but it's not really tubeless-compatible. They're more of a "performance over all else" sort of tire. WTB Horizons are a tick heavier but can take a beating. They're also considerably cheaper than the Herse branded Panaracers. I have Herse RTPs on one bike and WTB Byways on another.

I've used these tires on my Salsa Journeyman for my commute and light gravel grinding on the weekends. I havent had many complaints with the rides until the last 300 miles. My current wheels are 700x22 and my WTB Byways that are marked as 700x40 actually measure 700x35. That's about the low limit for me, but I'm running them tubed at 55psi. If you can get away with lower pressures, then maybe 35mm is fine for you. See more here:
