Wahoo PowrLINK Speedplay Power Meter Pedals: Details // Long-Term Review

 We've all waited long enough for this, so let's get straight into it. Today, Wahoo finally released the Powerlink Zero

 Speedplay power meter pedals. I've been using these for the last 12 months. I've done a lot of writing on these

 So yes, today's review is a long-term review on launch day

 I can confirm the delay in release of these pedals wasn't due to any technical issue with the pedals themselves

 It was simply supply chain. The data from these pedals both indoors and out has been pretty much spot-on from the get-go

 I can trust them to compare other power meters to both indoors and out

 And I've already done this in a number of reviews here on the GP Alama channel. So that's the summary

 Pulling up Wahoo's technical specifications of these pedals

 There's both a dual sided and a single sided version. The dual sided version coming in at a claimed

 276 grams with the single sided version coming in at 250 grams. Power measurement obviously dual sided on the dual sided

 Left only on the single sided. It measures cadence. They have LED indicators. There's left-right balance

 It has a rechargeable lithium-ion battery with 75 plus hours per charge

 Multiple Bluetooth connections. There are three Bluetooth connections available to these pedals plus ANT plus which allows numerous connections

 power accuracy claimed plus or minus one percent, temperature compensation, water resistance up to IPX7

 So there's no need for us to have any discussion around wide Q factors and why they might be good or bad

 Stack height 13 mil and the most important part is that they're speedplay cleat compatible. In addition to this

 They do support oval chainrings and they do have Auto Zero. Auto Zero kicks in after 30 seconds when they're unloaded

 So you're not clipped in the bike is vertical and there's a few other internal checks before that takes place on the pedals

 Wahoo tell me they have addressed some of the lateral pedal body movement issues

 They saw with the other versions of these speedplay pedals they've released

 So that's a good thing and I believe these are the only dual sided entry road power meter pedal on the market today

 At this point in time the Powerlink Zero doesn't have any support for additional pedal metrics such as ANT plus cycling dynamics or pedal

 Smoothest and torque effectiveness. Having said that, Wahoo do have a long history in feature updates for their products

 So, let's see what they have up their sleeve for firmware updates for these in the future

 I've also been told there is an upgrade path from the single to the dual. However, I don't have any further details on that right now

 Onto pricing and availability of the Powerlink Zero. The dual sided comes in at $999 US

 The single sided, well you do get two pedals, but only the left side has the measurement, comes in at $649.99 US

 In comparison the Asioma Duos sit at US $699 and the Garmin Rally RS

 RK, the road version of the Rallies, come in at US $1099. Availability is right now today

 Inside the box, you'll find the pedals themselves

 Documentation, the USB chargers, the standard tension walkable cleats, all of the adapters that you could think of to make these

 some pedal spacers. On the scales in the Llama Lab, the set that I had came in at

 Just for interest's sake, I did measure the Powerlink pod versus the Asioma Duo pod and here are the differences on screen now

 The Powerlink Zero pod size coming in at 32.25 millimeters at the widest point and the Asioma Duo comes in at

 35.3 millimeters at the widest point. So they're similar in design, but they are different

 Installation is straightforward requiring only an 8mm hex key and the pedals themselves. Always good practice to put a little bit of grease on

 The threads and also install with a pedal washer to ensure there's at least a 1 millimeter gap between the pedal pod and the crank

 Itself. The official documentation recommends a tightening torque of 30 Newton meters

 Now this can be quite difficult to judge without a torque wrench

 However, I'd call it really snug not loose and definitely not Superman tight

 Once the pedal or pedals are installed it's over to the Wahoo app and the setup wizard

 For the onboarding process something Wahoo do very well

 Now we click on wake up pedals, make sure they've spun around and are flashing

 The setup wizard does a firmware check. So if your pedals did need a firmware update that would take place right here

 The onboarding then takes you through the

 Speedplay cleats if you're not familiar with those or doing this for the first time if you have existing Speedplay cleats on your shoes

 You are good to go. These pedals are compatible

 Okay, I've already jumped ahead but this gives you some information here installing the left and right pedal with an 8mm hex wrench and

 Okay, some information on the charging port

 Calibration required just to do a zero offset

 Okay, left and right successfully zero offset that's all good to go next is the crank length setting which is important to get right

 If you're using something like Zwift, TrainerRoad or Wahoo's very own system

 The crank length within the pedals needs to be correct

 If you're using these pedals out on the road with a head unit such as the Element, Garmin Edge, Hammerhead, Karoo

 Etc. The sensor crank length setting will override this setting

 So it's important to get that right when setting these up on your head units, too

 After having the powerlink zero for over 12 months
