I got volkl deacon xt in 168, 76 width. I’m on the east coast with a lot of icy snow. That was a complete waste of $. Just after a week, when I started to go faster, the skis were chattering, skidding and catching the lines left by other ppl.

Skis for heavy skiers

I was recently recommended by my ski instructor a Volkl Deacon 84 for a frontside ski with occasional off piste capability.

Looking for some ski and ski length recommendations

I started to ski just recently on the east coast, but I’m an experienced cyclist and have strong leg muscles. I started with beginner-intermediate soft skis at ~10cm shorter than my height (volkl deacon xt, 168, 76mm wide) and after a few weeks I realized that they’re completely unstable at higher speeds and also catch into the tracks a lot. I got a more advanced and stiffer model from the same line (Volkl deacon 74, 168) and it was like a day and night difference.

Recommend a skinnier ski for an experienced skier?

I'm partial to the Volkl Deacon series. Serious edge hold, but more forgiving than a race ski. Fun to rip.

Are these skis too tricky for a newbie

I just couldn’t go any faster on xt and kendos where like night and day. Deacon line is very wide - i now have deacon 88 and deacon pro 74, which are both very stiff semi-racing skies. I think I lost about $100-150 after reselling XT’s, so not a big deal - still beats renting. But be honest when you resell them.

Help deciding best skis for me.

Get a ski less than 85mm underfoot. Look at the Volkl Deacon 84s - great for bombing and good in the bumps and off piste. The elan Ripsticks are similar if you get the 83s.
