It flexes on all axes from front to back, side to side, up and down. It has the most aggressive crampons, which will allow you to grip on hard surfaces, and then as you get into softer surfaces, the molded, injected molded plastic will continue to add additional grip, and with the flexibility, you're not getting over-grip, because as you flex, each crampon grips, and then it releases as you take your stride

TSL Snowshoes Symbioz Elite

  After some fairly steep jaunts in the snow on the Swan Range, such as Columbia Mountain (Columbia Falls, MT) and Holland Lake area (Condon, MT), and locally on the Herron Park Chase Overlook trail (Kalispell, MT), I was very satisfied with their performance from the standpoint of weight, flexibility, bindings, and sticking action on steep, compacted snow and ice. Lateral movements on steep hillsides was also fairly good.  However, they were not without problems. On the Chase Overlook trek carrying a day pack, I experienced problems in two different dimensions

 The result was sinking, and on steep deep powder areas there was a lot of slipping.  Another problem occurred on the Chase Overlook hike. A plastic piece (I think it is a shoe traction part that sits on the top surface of the snowshoe where the ball of the foot meets the snowshoe surface) broke off on the left snowshoe. It did not seem to impact the snowshoe function

 In areas of old, deep, compacted snow with deep holes and very irregular surface where previous hikers postholed from day(s) before, it was rough going. This may have been difficult for any type of snowshoe, except those old style fat snowshoes where the surface area is so large that the edges don't fall into the holes and irregularities. I also experienced problems in areas of deep, soft powder snow on both the flat and steep parts of the trail. What happened was not enough surface area to prevent sinking into the deep powder and this powder snow provided little or no surface for the cleats to grip

 Maybe the left foot front binding was not set quite tight enough--pure conjecture.  I too have some suggestions for the manufacturer. Add some natural means of attaching the snowshoe bag to a backpack. This is a major point

Symbioz Hyperflex Elite (English)

 The first pair came without front crampon points and the second pair, the straps were incorrectly installed. I didn't realize the problem with the straps till after tripping and falling on the mountain slopes that the both straps were coming loose. It took some problem solving on the mountain to realize that the heel straps on the one side had been fed under the locking buckle incorrectly. I had only made adjustments with the strap and had not fed it through the buckle when I first sized them to my boots so it must have been an assembly problem

I bought the TSL snowshoes for use on the Adirondack trails when flotation is less important and aggressive crampons are warranted-meaning well packed trails where one may encounter some ice. Snowshoes are required by State Law on the High Peaks trails when the snowfall exceeds 8 inches even when the trails are well packed. I bought the shortest shoes; saving my longer, competing brand, snowshoes for when I needed float such as breaking fresh snow covered trails. The crampons on the shoes come close to a hybrid of microspikes and full on crampons with some float

  To summarize; adequate under limited conditions, gripping force was phenomenal with the crampons when needed on steep slopes, easy to put on, but check and recheck all points of attachment carefully. These will not be my go to snowshoes but fill a limited need and I am generally satisfied with the purchase.

 Then you crank it twice, done. Another good feature about these snowshoes is if you're going uphill, you flip those down. If you guys plan on doing a lot of walking on ice, this thing has pretty killer crampons on the bottom so I wouldn't worry about slipping anywhere. So yeah, if you guys are looking for a good set of snowshoes, I highly recommend the TSL Symbiose Elite snowshoes

 I haven't really done too much deep snow this season. I think the deepest snow I've been in would maybe be around two and a half to three feet but with any type of snowshoe, you're going to sink about six inches if it's powder anyway. They work great on ice, hard snow, it's fantastic powder, it's not too bad also. It's good for uphill, going downhill is pretty fun too and yeah, if you guys want to see them in action, I'll link one of my other videos that you guys can go check out if you're interested and yeah, go take a look at that

 They took a while to adjust, but handled very well the uneven terrain of a diamond snowshoe trail. The grip on icy surfaces allowed us to feel confident. The grip on the side was also nice. Some reviewers mention that they are slightly unstable laterally

 These are not deep snow snowshoes. Their design is perfect while navigating the uneven trails. I have a pair of the other type (wide) - and those would have been useless and possible dangerous on the mountain trails. The symbiose snowshoes worked perflectly

Decent bite from the crampons but these shoes are too heavy, too bulky, and harder to get on and off than similar shoes from their competitors. Binding mechanism has also resulted in blisters for me on both heels based on where the strap presses against the boot heel and tightening them enough to actually be functional. The sizing mechanism will also occasionally release itself - this could be legitimately dangerous if moving quickly or if it happened on sketchy terrain. They have a great look, but function wins over form, especially in the mountains

 I believe I will get many years of great use out of them. If for some reason I change my mind, I will come back here and adjust the review accordingly. If I purchase an additional pair, I will probably opt for the ‘Expert’ model to compare against the ‘Elite’ model.

 For buyers in Canada, the Expert model seems to be twice the price of the Elite model, although for customers in the USA there is a negligible price difference between the two models. Both models are made in small, medium, and large sizes. However, once again, availability of all sizes for both models in all markets will be a problem.  I only have one small complaint on these snowshoes

 I have included some links here for some YouTube videos which you should review prior to purchase. However, once I saw these videos, I was pretty much sold on them given the ‘old’ technology of my older snowshoes.  I have had a prescription to Backpacker Magazine in the USA for half my life, so when they provided the Editor’s Choice Awards for this snowshoe in 2014, well, that definitely solidified my view on the product pre-purchase.  Having such a breakdown of the hardware high in the mountains on difficult terrain could be disastrous to a safe extraction.  I can perhaps suggest a slightly altered adjustment system for these front bindings that prevents this binding from the ability to loosen themselves quite so easily. However, the user can protect himself or herself against this action by maximizing the tightening action on the front bindings to disallow these straps from loosening themselves. In other words, the less tight these bindings are, the greater the chance that they will loosen themselves through a day’s stress on the shoes

Superior-Quality Technical Snowshoes

 When I have to switch from snowshoe mode to crampon or foot mode, I have to attach the snowshoes to the backpack. However, there are currently no engineered means of easily attaching the carrying sack to a backpack. Of course, you can simply attach the snowshoes without the bag (probably what most folks do), and such an option would allow for more points of attachment. However, I have thus far opted to carry the snowshoes in the bag since then I can carry both snowshoes with the cleats facing each other without concerning myself with additional difficulties of going sans bag
