 So as you're hiking up steeper inclines, if it's icy, these will get you where you want to go. They also feature an addition to the back. This tail is removable from the shoe, so if you're going to be going in really deep snow, you can just snap it on. It takes a little bit of work to get it on there all the way

MSR Evo Snowshoe Video Review

The MSR Evo and Revo lines cost less and are great too, but are heavier. Still highly recommended.

I just blew through my previous pair of snowshoes, so I'm in the market for a new set.  

I mostly use them for backcountry camping trips while pulling a polk sled.  I typically will go about 10-15 km per day. Mostly flat terrain.  Sometimes I need to break trail, so it will be a mix of knee deep powder and some crusted over snow.  I'm 6'1 200 and pull about a 60lbs sled.

Any Recommendations?

Snowshoe Recommendation?

 I would probably get the Evo Ascent if it was available, but that's more money and they weren't available when I was buying.  Beware: A lot of is made of where you snowshoe and the conditions in the place when buying. I feel like a lot of reviews and recommendation are for the deep powder white conditions of Colorado and similar. This worked for me on the East Coast

 I got these plus the tails and seemed to be good for wondering around Vermont either around the ski resort or on trails. It's an excellent work out for the days the days you don't ski, and you get out and you don't pay for a full price lift pass. I would probably get the Evo Ascent if it was available, but that's more money and they weren't available when I was buying. Snowshoes?

I havent had these long so maybe this review is premature. So far they are what i expected, good for snowshoe trails, meaning traveled on and slightly packed. These are NOT for breaking new snow as they dont have very good flotation at all (@ 180 LBS). They do make a little slapping noise when walking from the plastic hitting the heel of my boot

So far so good- if used for what their meant for.

 When your foot is in it, you got a lot of movement and this actually produces a really nice natural gait. You can run in these, hike in these. The other part of this snowshoe that puts it above other brands and models is this metal track that goes down both sides of the snowshoe. Instead of just having a crampon up here, a crampon on this side, the MSRs actually go beyond that having this metal track that runs the length of both sides

So what this does is if you're on uneven ground, you're getting purchase even when the crampon is not touching the snow. So typically you dig your crampon in, but on these, if you're on a rock, you can see how at different angles, this metal track is grabbing and I tell you on Adirondack high peaks, I wouldn't use anything but that

 So the Evo, both models, have a really, really good binding. The strap is cold-proof, the whole binding you're able to put on with gloves. One thing I also like is you can adjust this back strap once for the size of your boot and then you just slip it on and off and this horseshoe design on the binding allows you to pull the binding out and pull your foot out really quick. So they're really easy to get on and off

 They have a modular float tail and what this does is it extends your snowshoe by six inches by popping this modular tail on, securing it down, and now you have a 28 inch snowshoe. The base model Evo is $139. The Evo Ascent, which I have here, which has the extra televator for the heel and also three bindings, this model is $199. Modular tail retails for $50

MSR EVO Trail and EVO Ascent Snowshoe Review

I only have 2 complaints about these: The first is either a design flaw or manufacturing defect where on the bottom of the snowshoe where the part that pivots connects to the snowshoe frame there is metal on metal rubbing that instantly scratched off the finish and who knows over time how deep the gouge will get as they continue rubbing at a wrong degree on each other.  Second complaint is they kick up a ton of snow when going downhill. Snow was consistently coating now only the entire length of the back of my legs, but also hitting my lower backpack. My other snow shoes don’t do this

Overall good

 If you know that you there was just a fresh dump of snow and you're gonna need more surface so you can float a bit more all you gotta do is attach these at the back they don't add a ton of weight and they are fantastic to help you cross the sections where the snow might be a bit deeper. Reason number two is their binding system. One of the things that I really appreciate about this binding system is that it allows you to strap many kinds of footwear to it. I've seen people using trail runners when it wasn't too cold outside but they just wanted to float a bit on top of the snow

 I've used them myself with regular hiking boots or even when I go out in the Adirondacks Mountain or in the White Mountains in the northeast I like to bring my big mountaineering boots and this binding will really accommodate my really big hard shell mountaineering boots because when you go out on some of the higher peaks up there there's gonna be a section where you're gonna want to use snow shoes and in a lot of cases you don't have a choice it's the rules of the of the trail so you don't destroy the trails but then you get on the ridges and where the trees aren't anymore and you really want to switch these for your real mountaineering crampons so that you don't slide off the mountain and this snow shoe allows me to wear my really nice mountaineering boots and when I get on top of the mountain that I can just swap them. Also for the binding system it's got three straps on the top one at the back. What this allows you to do is find the perfect pressure on your boot so that you don't cut your circulation. Having multiple straps like this really allows you to dial this in properly

 I walk around at 180 pounds usually plus if I go winter backpacking I often bring 40 to 50 pounds on my back and somehow even though they're super small they manage to keep me on top of the snow. Their slim profile also allows you to walk in a very ergonomic way. I've had in the past snow shoes that were way too wide making me have to step my feet really far apart from each other and if you're not used to that you might develop some groin pain some hip pain compared to these you can literally walk the same way you would usually without having to spread your legs apart making it extremely comfortable to hike around. This design in my opinion is the perfect snow shoe for established trails whether you want to go on local trails or you want to go peak bagging in the Adirondacks or in the White Mountains they are the perfect size to get you around very fast and efficiently and if you're looking to cross some open patches of field and even some lakes I know that in previous videos I've said that the tails were not super great for these snow shoes but honestly I don't know why I said this because I spent all of last winter crossing lakes with these and open fields and I added them and I really put these tails to the test and they are fantastic

WHY The MSR EVO ASCENT Are The Best SNOWSHOES!

 You also really have to make sure your foot is in the correct position (ie ball of foot on the spot that designates that). I have no complaints but haven't used these in really deep, powdery snow. If you are not sure of the appropriate snowshoes to choose I suggesting looking at the MSR website.

These work really well and the amazon price seems to be the standard price out there for these snowshoes. These work well for those that are just getting in to snowshoeing. They work well for my boyfriend who isn't used to walking with his feet far apart from one another. I will say they scruff/catch pretty easy at the front
