There's three, in my opinion, that are worth it:. Thomastik Infeld Jazz Flats - nickel flatwound with a silk wrapped inner core - low tension, good midrange, expensive but they never need replacing.

I really like the sound of flats, I’m curious why rounds are the standard today.

Why does rock, metal, punk tend to use roundwounds instead of flatwounds today?

I’ve tried a bunch of different flats recently, and my two favorites are the Thomastik-Infeld for a super full, mellow sound, and GHS Brite if you want something a little brighter. I’m running the TI on a P bass, and the Brites on a Jazz.

Until yesterday I had only used roundwound strings because I'm a cheapskate and I thought flats must be some kind of gimmick. I read up on the tone differences but couldn't really distinguish them through my phone or laptop speakers. I was curious about the different feel so I got a set of Ernie Ball flats and threw them on yesterday.

I'm really into them! The feel alone is worth it, they're incredibly smooth. Like they almost feel oily or something, they're so easy to slide around on.

The sound difference is pretty big too - I'm playing an ibanez talman 100 into a 25 watt orange crush and it sounds so much fuller with flats. I read that they produce a bit less treble but I seem to be able to EQ it so they still sound bright - but so much more resonant. To me it sounds almost like a piano, honestly.

If you're thinking of trying flats, definitely go for it. I don't think I'm ever going back to rounds!

Flatwounds - holy crap, the hype is real!

I use thomastik flats on my 5 string with humbuckers I love the thump and finger feel of the strings. I tried round but I always go back to the flats.

I usually rock medium gauge rounds since that’s what the gigs I play call for - but I always wondered what the classic flats and P bass tone sounded like. I was able to get my action a lot lower but the low mids are way more focused. Loving it so far!

Finally doing the P Bass with flatwounds thing. No surprise: it’s awesome.

I randomly decided to try some flatwounds as a silly experiment and I was blown away. I thought flats sounded super round and bassy and were only good for playing slow fingerstyle stuff. Turns out they are super versatile. I could get all sorts of sounds out of them using the controls on my jazz bass. I think I actually prefer the slap sound I get with the flats, plus they’re super smooth so I don’t lose any skin when I’m doing big slides. I never thought I’d be into flatwounds but trying them was a great call. I hope they hold their sound for a decent amount of time. If you’re thinking about trying flats, do it!

Thomastik Jazz Flats on my Rick! Extremely versatile sound and delightful to play. I have tapewounds on my violin bass, but I almost never pick it up over the Rick.

String preference?

Thanks in advance for any helpful advice y'all have to offer. I'm coming back to playing after a 15+ year hiatus. In my former musical life I was a guitar-to-bass convert playing loud rock music with a pick. At the time I was sporting a MiM Fender Jazz strung with whatever rounds I could afford, and I was happy with my setup (if not my skill). Now I'm playing a Squier CV 60s Precision and mostly trying to emulate classic 60s and 70s motown, soul, and funk. I put tapes on the Squier, and while I much prefer the feel (and sound) of the tapes, I'm having a real challenge with the lower string tension. (FYI, the strings I went with are Fender 9120s, which I've read are on the lower-tension side, even for tapes.) 

I'm finding the low tension makes my timing seem looser, to the point of being sloppy. I'm also finding that the tapes are much "clackier" (for lack of a better word) on my frets. I'm not experiencing fret buzz - which seems to be a non-issues on this bass after a good set-up - just a pretty consistent "clack" that jumps out  in the lower 5ish frets, especially on the E and A strings.

So my specific questions:

Is my technique the problem? Much of my practice since coming back to bass has been trying to dial in my technique for a "clean" sound. Like I said, I like most of what I'm getting from the tapes, but my timing feels way less clean &amp; consistent than it did before I swapped rounds for tapes.

Are there tapes that are higher tension, and does it sound like that'd help? I was thinking about swapping to flats, which I understand are generally higher tension than tapes, but I \*really\* like the way the tapes feel, other than the low tension/perceived "sloppiness."

Any other advice that I'm not specifically asking for, but might be worth thinking about as I try to sort out my string issues?

What flats should I get?

Thomastik Infeld's are worth the price. I've tried every string recommended here and the TIs are a cut above the rest. Will never play with another set (I've been flatwound only for a while and have TIs on both of my basses)

As the title suggests, I'm looking for suggestions on some flatwound strings.  I've never played them before but from reading on here, I'm very excited to try them.   I have a sterling stingray 4hh.  I play music ranging from walking country lines to slap funk.  I currently have the flea signature strings on, but after a rowdy night of party jamming, they're a little worse for wear.   Any insight or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

Thomastik Infeld Jazz Flats are amazing. I was a confirmed nickelwound player forever but these things are too good.

So I strung my Vintage VJ74 (J bass) with some Rotosound RS77 LD flatwounds recently and oh wow I absolutely fell in love with it. The sound, the feel most of all, is just something completely different from rounds, especially with a pick.

A distorted tone, i found, is so much more focused and direct than when I had rounds on 'em imo

It will take a lot of effort to make me convert back to rounds :P best of all, probably won't need to buy new strings for a very long time hehe
