 So let's put that aside let's look at what we've got now we've got a really well-made hand finished in Finland outdoor GPS sports watch which is perfectly suited for runners triathletes multi-sport sailors windsurfers kayakers pretty well anything it's a hundred meters water-resistant biometric pressure sensor compass activity tracker I've now upgraded the review of the Spartan Ultra from a measly two and a half out of five to a solid four and a half out of five it's a product I think is even going to get stronger and hopefully very soon Suunto will add the moves count apps and when that's on board Suunto Spartan Ultra will be a serious challenger to the Phoenix 5 but it does need that I'm giving it four out of five star review.

 Point of interest is from your location either live or in moves count that you've saved in the watch and if you want to navigate to one of those you just choose it and then press the central button to navigate to that point of interest. Post session review on the Spartan Ultra is very good it's all accessed via the logbook you have a history of training sessions here let's just pop into one this is a trail running session 7.3 miles pace heart rate heart rate graph running cadence calories recovery time peak training effect altitude etc etc so loads of data there all very clearly presented naturally this would be backed up onto your moves counter via your phone or and your PC there's some auto lap data there as well pretty much everything you need to see if you you know after a training session you can definitely see all you need to see on the watch you don't have to wait till it's been synced. A simple but useful feature a stopwatch start stop reset easy as that

 Let's take a quick look at navigation something that's under improved significantly since the Spartan initially came out we've got navigation settings and the digital compass from this screen you can actually take a shortcut to the key navigation features. The Spartan has a basic route follow feature so here I've got a couple of routes that have been uploaded to the watch this is the Huntington seven mile run you choose your file and press navigate the circle shows you where you are so I'm not currently on currently off track I'm not on the route it's just a breadcrumb trail it doesn't tell you turn left turn right you have to look at the breadcrumb and navigate your way around. Point of interest is from your location either live or in moves count that you've saved in the watch and if you want to navigate to one of those you just choose it and then press the central button to navigate to that point of interest. Post session review on the Spartan Ultra is very good it's all accessed via the logbook you have a history of training sessions here let's just pop into one this is a trail running session 7

 Once you've finished if you set up your Spartan this way you can tell it if it was a hard session how you feel which can be quite useful if you're feeling a bit under the weather to go back in the moves count. So there's a summary now of the session that pops up with a altitude profile I'm just going to delete that one for now. So that was my power bike session let's go to something else let's go back up to exercise let's choose that was my power one let's choose running basic so running basic is a default sports program actually we'll use mine because that's got a bit more information here. So this is what this is Tristan is running this is the screen that I've customized again you can set the targets you can set the duration target you can choose a navigation you can set the GPS so auto pause is on power saving is a new feature which wasn't on the original Spartan you can select various features to increase the battery life GPS accuracy again that will have an effect on your battery life I would be leaving it on best if you're just walking or hiking you could leave that to a lower sampling rate

The build is good and solid

 So you have to click through several things to find compass, there we go compass and you can see the, whoop I didn't want that, so to go back you have to hold this down, compass. You see the touch screen is very inaccurate. OK now this is really bad, this is about the 4th time that I've had to calibrate it. So every time you go back into it, instead of that just working straight away, there you go, now I've calibrated it

1 kilometres, 497 metres of climbing. Now I'm not entirely sure which one's right but I can compare this very similar ride that I did last week. There's almost exactly the same ride that I did last week which showed 553 metres of climbing so I think that the Spartan is really quite out, it showed the climbing as really quite low. A few other problems with it, it's really quite, the touch screen, you can see I'm trying to do things with the touch screen, nothing happens you know

Now once I've sort of opened it up it's working but it's really quite tricky to use

 It gives a $1000 watch and it doesn't even have an alarm clock, so pretty poor, pretty poor indeed. Look some good things, it's got some good stuff like the, I do like the steps so the steps seem to be pretty good, that's nice. Watch face I like, it's got a nice light, back light as well you can't really see it but it's got the back light so I like the watch face. It's more comfortable than the Ambit and as a watch, as a dress watch you can see it's obviously a lot nicer

Way behind most smart sports watches in features and programming. It’s like 1/10 of design needed was done before release. Of reworked and thought out it would be a stellar sports watch but Apple 3 and for hard core athletes the new Fenix is in another category all together. If hearts set on Suunto buy a core military, it does much more on actual watch accurately

I just love the gps performance of the Suunto spartan trainer watch I have had for years.  Never going back to Garmin.  Also, I have a different stroke that is more energy efficient less speed in open water than in a pool.

How Accurate is the Suunto Spartan HR Watch? I was out for my first open water swim for the first time in a while and took my watch with me. My stroke rate seems to be slower in the pool...is it different in open water?

Questionnable reliability

 This means that it should actually use less battery life when used for an extended period of time, even in conjunction with the routes feature, which load the route over top of your breadcrumbs. When returning from the alpine a couple of years ago here in Squamish, some heavy clouds moved in making it almost impossible to find my way back through the valley. And the trackback feature as it was then called on the Ambit 3 was a huge lifesaver, it allowed me to retrace my steps within meters. So I'm sure with its improved ease of use, tons of other runners are going to benefit from what is basically a built-in safety net who otherwise wouldn't have known how to access it or maybe even that it existed in the first place

 I used the route feature on my Ambit 3 while pacing a friend during the Hard Rock 100 a couple of years ago to get us through Oscar's Pass, which is a particularly challenging section of the course to navigate, so I'm glad to see that this feature has actually been improved upon in the Spartan series. The Spartan still has a digital compass which is tilt compensated to give you accurate readings even if the watch is not level. This is accessible from navigation just off the main menu when you're not in exercise mode. Now the best new feature on the Spartan series in terms of ease of use is the breadcrumbs
