I've been seeing people rave about the j mascis jazzmaster for years. Maybe not quite as authentic/original as the CV, but I think it sounds pretty damn close.

Squier has some solid guitars actually. Some of the Affinitys I've played are good. And I'd put the J Mascis Jazzmaster up against guitars in a higher price range.

I tried a Squire J. Mascis Jazzmaster back in 2016. It retailed at $499.

The Squier Jazzmaster has the classic wiring but my understanding is that the pickups are voiced a little hotter than traditional Jazzmaster pickups. It's also got a 9.5 radius fretboard. It's definitely more vintage inspired then the Player Series but it's not exactly a faithful recreation of a vintage guitar either. You also get the build quality questions that come with purchasing a Squier that might lead you to replacing the pickups, bridge, etc.

I would \*not\* recommend a Squier Jazzmaster for your first electric guitar. They require a lot of setting up and fiddling about before they're really playable. Go the Strat.
