Samsung KS8500

I just upgraded to a CX from a Samsung KS8500 and was worried about it not looking that much better to warrant the upgrade. I was dead wrong. It was definitely worth it.

Those TV’s from the early 2000’s LCD’s were at max 300nit by todays standard and plasma were usually considerably less. The C1 can hit 800nit and that is more than enough for me. I love my C1 and I’ve owned a Samsung KS8500 which topped out at nearly 1600nit and a Panasonic GT50 which peaked at around 100nit. For most people the C1 will be plenty bright.

Be aware this is a MIXED review. The TV itself (which we eventually bought from Best Buy) is fantastic -- as advertised, the images are are razor sharp. We have a CX in living room with lots of windows and natural lighting to the side. No direct sunlight and it does well. Came from a Samsung KS8500. If I was to replace the TV in the future, it would be with another OLED again.

Make no mistake, we LOVE this TV. But I have a problem with Samsung. There is NO owners manual with the $1,500 TV!!! I had the KS8500 curved model and was always floored by its picture quality. After my Panasonic GT50 it was one of the best displays I’ve owned and for an edge lit display it was one of the best around at the time. I have a C1 now and see a lot of the qualities that made the Samsung great, but with superior contrast, motion and better gaming performance. The KS8*** series were some of the best displays Samsung had produce with the ultra black (moth’s eye) filter which absorbed light to help combat reflection and improve perceived black levels.

I just found out on line that this (2016) model TV has a capacitor defect. It has been overheating and turning off. The requires repeated turning and off. It also affects the DVR efficacy, resulting in having to re-power, both DVR and TV. Four years is not sufficient life shelf for a TV costing $1,2...

This was the TV I felt was a major upgrade. It was to my eyes a bit brighter and also had a way better picture. The A80J has almost a 3d look to it on high quality content. The black crush was not an issue for me unlike the LGs.
