The biggest limitation of the SPD-30, specifically, is that you can't load your own samples which means you're not only stuck with the built-in drum sounds but you also can't use it to control backing tracks or anything like that without using external hardware. The SPD-30 is more meant as a mini kit than a sample pad to go on an acoustic drum set. Maybe look into the SPD-SX if you want to buy Roland. The new "pro" version has HH/expression pedal support like the SPD-30 but it's super expensive.

It has pretty steep learning curve, but when you get hang of it it's super easy and fast to use. I'm not 100% certain if this will be helpful, but I bought the Roland SPD-SX and we use that for our backing tracks, click track and samples. It's an incredibly easy setup and I've got it setup so that the click and back track trigger simultaneously. It's got master out and sub-out options. Send the master out to FOH and send the sub out to my guitarists and vocalists wireless transmitter.

The Roland SPD-SX is great for sampling things while drumming since you can play the pads with drum sticks, but they aren't all that great if you want to play samples with your feet. It has inputs on the back so you can add a few foot pedals/triggers to your kit, but it does not read electronic hi hat pedals at all(or any variable foot pedal for that matter), something to keep in mind if that is your goal.
