Polk Signature Series S60 review 2022 - BEST Floorstanding Speaker 2022

 The S60's are nicely designed, aesthetically pleasing, and very well built with good insulation and internal bracing to dampen resonance. However, I will ding Polk here on the fact that though the finish is modern and contemporary - it is a veneer, which just seems a little unimpressive and I do wish these came in a piano gloss finish. However, Polk made these Signature Series speakers using quality components and excellent build. These S60s look as good as they sound and I am very satisfied with their construction and quality

 The bass they bright, clean, and solid - with just the right amount of punch for low-frequency effect. In stereo mode you definitely do not need a separate subwoofer; however, in the home theater mode, a separate sub does add a noticeable bit of authoritative impact on the effects. Don't get me wrong, you definitely can feel the superb bass output with these, but as I seriously doubt that it is physically possible for any floor standing speaker to produce LFE in home theater mode to match a powered subwoofer. But again, in pure stereo music mode the S60's shine throughout a very wide acoustic range to deliver a very natural, detailed, accurate, balanced, and blended sound

 These are Bi-Amped to my Yamaha Advantage receiver that delivers 95 watts per channel. The bi-amping does make a noticeable sound difference, especially with opening up the high-frequency range. If your receiver can assign two channels to bi-amp, you should really do it. If you have a receiver with a calibration mic, definitely use it in your initial set up to ensure proper phase control and distance

 Here I have a pair of Polk Signature S60 American Hi-Fi Tower speakers. I'm going to unbox these speakers and test them out coming up on Thrifty AV. The first thing I want to point out is one of these boxes shows significant handling damage both on this side and on this side. It is literally torn all the way across the box over here

 So I cannot blame all issues with the speaker but that being said, let's get it started. It's now running through a series of frequencies and measuring the response. I need to start over because I should not be talking while this is going on. Here are the results of the audio measurement system test

 So let's do something a little less subjective. Let's actually do a test measurement of the speakers. This is a Behringer ECM8000 measurement microphone. Using this and the open source audio measurement software on my laptop, I'm going to place this about two feet in front of one of the speakers and check out the frequency response

 There are peaks and valleys in here but everything stays within a decent boundary between negative 35 and negative 25 dB. I was on the fence about buying these speakers. I've had my Polk speakers for 20 years and still work well but when I saw these I wondered if they were worth the price. As soon as I plugged these in, there was a noticeable difference. There so much more depth in the in what I hear, whether it's music or a movie

I did a bit of shopping for speakers, and these seemed to have the best reviews of the ones in my price range. It's been a while since I've had "home" speakers, since I switched to a sound bar and subwoofer for my television, but I'd missed quality audio from other sources. Frankly I couldn't be happier with these speakers, but not quite as happy with the UPS shipping. They beat the crap out of the speaker boxes, but thankfully they eventually made it intact

I bought one of these as a start to building a home theater/gaming/music playing system and by far one of the best purchases I've made, yes they are heavy but would you expect a carboard box to sound good? Probably not, weight was not an issue, they sound great and really give your movies a completely full range sound, music is better, movies are better, and gaming is better. They standout in any room and will have anyone who sees them asking to hear them. Great job Polk!
