Ploopy Classic Trackball

Overall, I highly recommend trying it out _if_ you're OK with the lack of a. firmware/hardware remap of buttons. And apart from the minor downsides I. mentioned, this is already the best trackball I've used thus far.

Tried the MX ergo, but it turns out thumb trackballs aren't really my thing. Interested in picking up a Ploopy classic, but the shipping costs + VAT charge I'll have to pay once it enters the EU really add up to a big chunk of cash (which I'm not sure I'm willing to pay for something I *might* not even like). If you're in the EU and reading this with a Ploopy Classic lying around that you're not using, please let me know.

It is also likely that with Ploopy Classic, the procedure will need to be repeated much less often, although cleaning the bearings seems difficult, they will probably just have to be changed occasionally (how often?..). I'm a beginner with trackballs, maybe I missed some other options? Perhaps some of you have faced a similar problem and somehow solved it?

I'm assuming you're referring to a Ploopy Classic Trackball, and I get why you feel the price is ridiculous. The thing is - this is a very very small independent company (like 2 people small) producing these and they're fully open source, customizable (both buttons-wise as well as physically), upgradeable, and easily repairable, which no other company can get close to matching. Any other trackball company (save for the Gameball which I believe is an independent company/guy, but that's closed source, not customizable, upgradeable, easily repairable, or open source) is a massive corporation employing hundreds if not thousands of employees, and has the ability to mass produce and sell thousands of products for a much cheaper price for a variety of reasons. Buying a Ploopy isn't about getting the cheapest (say $20-50 range) trackball, it's about supporting an independent company trying to make things more accessible to everyone (through open-sourcing everything regarding their products), while producing a quality product that should last many years to come, and can be easily repaired/changed with little effort/cost to further extend it's life.

I find the ergonomics better on the Ploopy Classic. The buttons feel great, the scrolling is a bit of a weak point though. I replaced the scroll wheel with an indexed one that uses a paperclip to give it clicks and it's alright. It doesn't track scrolling quickly though.

I’ve been using a Ploopy classic with Steermouse on Mac. Love the trackball, but when I use the ball to scroll, it tends to stutter between vertical and horizontal scrolling.

I have some previous, albeit brief experience with the Logitech Trackman Marble when I was younger, so I am assuming that switching to a trackball wouldn't be too drastic for me. My number one criteria that I was looking for was comfort, but I also want to make an investment in something that will last a long time. For that reason, I am choosing a finger trackball instead of thumb-balls as I have some RSI in my thumb as well. After looking at a bunch of reddit posts and youtube reviews, I think I narrowed it down to these two: Kensington Expert and the Ploopy Classic Trackball.

I have tried and tested the smaller elecom deft pro with 'bearing mod', logitech mx ergo, Kensington expert and the ploopy classic - the ploopy is better in ball feel, shape and also build quality feel. I really came to like the texture of it actually.
