 So typically big ankle cuffs lots of padding pretty over belt which makes sense in a mountain biking application but too much shoe when you're thinking about road or gravel. That's why this shoe by Pearl Izumi is actually pretty interesting it is designed as a mountain bike shoe but it's not super overbuilt and because of that I think it makes a great candidate if you're looking for a flat pedal gravel shoe or bike packing shoe. Before we get into the shoe itself my favorite part of the video where I try to anticipate your comments yes every shoe is a cycling shoe yes I'm probably not going to mention your favorite brand or type of shoe because I don't have the time or the money to do so so forgive me. Some of you gonna say why does a lightweight flat pedal shoe matter? When we're not cycling Laura and I do a lot of trail running and you can really feel the grams and ounces in that so my obsession with a minimalist style cycling shoe definitely is influenced by other activities and when you think about it short of the wheels which are constantly spinning the shoes are probably one of the most important parts to shave weight in your whole cycling system

Almost Perfect "Gravel" Shoe?

Anyone have good suggestions for shoes for long rides and especially for touring?

I’m looking for Spd cleated shoes where the cleats are recessed (so mountain bike type).  Right now I have a pair of mountain bike shoes that are 7 years old I got for $50 and am realizing a new pair could make a world of difference.

Specifically looking for comfy shoes that are still ridged for 50-100 mile rides, but that you can jump off that the bike and walk around on (even short hikes) and that are also breathable.  

Sorry if this question has been posted a million times.... for some reason it’s hard to find a good pair.

Best shoes for long rides/touring

sizing runs really small

 But the X-Alp Summit does not come in half sizes, so it's not as easy to size up. So I'm a US 11.5 without my swollen feet, of course, so I ended up going with a size 46 in these shoes. The sizing is a little bit larger than a normal 46, I would say, so it ended up working out pretty perfectly for my use case

 So over the past three months, these Pearl Izumi X-Alp Summits have pedaled 1,700 miles, 200 hours and 230,000 feet of climbing. So what am I looking for in a shoe like this? Well, first off, something that's comfortable, not only when I'm pedaling all day, but also walking. I'm looking for a grippy outsole, something that actually grips really well to a trail. I'm looking for a durable and somewhat wider toe box for not only when I'm hiking, but also for swelling

 And while this shoe is great, it definitely doesn't have all of those characteristics, and that's where the X-Alp Summit comes into play. So I tend to size up with my cycling shoes because I try to account for that swelling when I'm on a bike packing trip. But the X-Alp Summit does not come in half sizes, so it's not as easy to size up. So I'm a US 11

I got my first travel bike and am looking for a pair of shoes. 

The purpose would be to be able to clip in for long touring, quick 30-40km rides but also that they are durable enough to dismount and enjoy the scenery that I biked to (woods, lakes, walk around etc). 

Are there any obvious outliers that are great, or is it simply a size/for thing?

Gravel shoe recommendations

 However: this shoe has everything I was looking for: the Vibram sole would provide great traction while bike-hiking; the soles were not overly stiff and it was easy to walk around in them; the outer material appears to be extremely tough and waterproof but most likely not very breathable. I ended up purchasing FiveTen Kestrel Lace ups in my normal shoe size. However, I had to use some shoe-stretcher spray to loosen the right shoe just a bit and now they're great.

Great shoe but not for wide feet.

I'm planning a tour in the near future, and I'm trying to decide what I need. I know you lose a certain amount of power when wearing non-clip shoes. For those that have toured before, is this a must?
