 I bought extra large mittens so that I could were thin liners underneath. There is plenty of room for the fingers, but the thumb is way too snug. Even without liners one, the thumb is tight.  For those who may not realize why mittens are warmer than gloves it is because there is more air in a mitten and it is the air that warms up and keeps your hand warm

Well build but with one fatal flaw...

 So it is a completely waterproof, windproof shell. It has got really good materials there and the Gore-Tex is, again, guaranteed to keep you dry without a lot of extra weight. We are using Primaloft gold insulation. It is the highest Primaloft insulation that you can get, the lightest and the highest warmth to weight ratio that Primaloft offers

 Some of the features on the mittens include a high loft moon pile fleece on the inside. So there is a fleece on the inside of the mitten itself as well as the liner that comes inside. Now the liner is removable, so you can actually take off the shell glove and there is a nice liner in there as well. And, as I mentioned, that liner is fully insulated as well with that 340 grams of Primaloft

 We are using Primaloft gold insulation. It is the highest Primaloft insulation that you can get, the lightest and the highest warmth to weight ratio that Primaloft offers. There is 170 grams of that Primaloft in the actual mitten itself and in the liner there is actually 340 grams of that Primaloft insulation. So there is a really ample amount of insulation throughout the entire glove that is going to provide warmth in the most extreme conditions

Yes they are warm - But what is totally wrong is they used thick leather that is too stiff removing any hope of dexterity. There is also a mismatch between the inner and out gloves on width of finger to thumb. That is a real problem if you're using these with things like riding a bike or using a tool (I do both in deep snow). What I have found is that Black Diamond which has a very similar design solved this by using much softer leather which stretches and flexes MUCH easier

 Now these are really good compared to any other mittens because they're way more heavy or they're heavier and everything. I've used black diamond mittens. I've used quite a few and Yellowstone and they're okay, but it's still got a little bit chilly. This sucker, however, I can't remember maybe a couple of times when it was raging 40 and 50 mile an hour winds where I had to suck my finger in to get it out and put it inside

 That's the maximum warmth option. You can do that. These are big enough for that. But so often I would get to camp

 It's not rubber. I'm not quite sure what it is, but it's a good tacky cloth. Inside the glove here is again a nice fleece liner and this thing is loaded with insulation. So it actually has insulation inside the back of the hand

 It's a little bit gross, but these are completely washable. So the Outdoor Research Ultimint is really super sweet. And just to give you an idea how warm these are, even though it was minus 40 at the south pole at 9,000 to 12,000 effective feet, when I put my hand inside this glove and I skied all day, even though it was raging cold and with my pogies on, my hands were actually still not only toasty. Only once or twice did I do the secret technique of pulling my thumb out and then putting my hand in completely in here

Definitely warm gloves, well made. But personal opinions: they fit a bit big, and really suffer from the lack of ability to cinch around the wrists to keep them on. Now you've got double PrimaLoft insulation, and then on the outside you've got a Gore-Tex shell for waterproof, and then the thumb and the palm of the hand is actually reinforced in a leather, which makes it really tough so you can hang on to ropes, hang on to ice tools and things of that nature

 So overall, excellent glove. I just recently spent three weeks with these mittens in Nepal, in the snow, in the ice, at high altitude, and they were the warmest gloves I've ever used. They are a little bit expensive, they run about $199, but how much money are your fingers really worth? If you're going to be at high altitude or really cold temperatures, you've got to get yourself some of these Outdoor Research Ultimittens, you're really going to like them.
