Pro-ject Essential Stylus. Hi, I have a Pro-ject essential turntable, used with my Naim Nait 5si amp, Phono Box e simple pre-amp & Fyne F501 speakers. The essential came with a basic Ortofon 5e stylus and I’ve fallen out of love with Vinyl as the sound is harsh. The hifi shop recommended the Ortofon 10 or 20, and said it would transform the sound, and I heard no difference.

Upgrade U-Turn Cartridge or Look into Turntable Upgrade

Also if you have the turntable really close to one of your speakers that can cause noise. I got my Orbit a couple of months ago and went with the Ortofon OM 5E cart. I went with that cart because the voltage output was lower than the 2M Red or Blue and thus a better match for my Cambridge Solo phono preamp. The Red and Blue tend to run higher output voltages than listed in their specs (from what I've read) which may or may not affect your sound.

Dual 502 / turntable advice for newbie

Sonus don’t exist anymore, and hunting for 40 year old NOS styli makes little sense. The Dual tonearm is low mass, you need a high compliance cartridge. I would recommend the Ortofon OM 5E for a good mechanical match that is cheap but decent quality. Find a turntable setup guide and an alignment protractor, changing carts is not complex.

Am I right in seeing that I would have to replace the Spindeck’s with a OM-5e, which would be $50 or so?. Is the upkeep for one of the Audio Technicas significantly less pricey than the Spindeck?

Set up help

The ortofon 5e is a good budget friendly cartridge. Theres also the 5s which is a bit better. I personally like the Sumiko pearl. You dont need a new mat unless that one is leeching or really damaged.

Cartridge time! (Newbie question)

It was my first decent cart (after the ortoron om 5e) and have now upgraded to the blue stylus (about $200). Love the sound, but i know people here knock ortofons a lot and like i said i could be missing something cuz ive only ever owned and listened to ortofon carts. People say good things about the AT 95 series (or w e theyre called) and nagaokas. Heard some decent things about the grados at your price range but no real consensus.
