The turntable was mainly picked because of the discount I got, since it was a demo model. It was already a contestant when I was looking, so the offer just gave me the extra push. I was recommended upgrading the pickup, but I wasn’t sure I’d wanna spend those $100+ on one, especially since I had an alright one on it already (Ortofon OM 10), but after I heard the difference I knew I made the right call. For CD’s I’m using an NAD C538, since I also got that at a bargain.

Good shootout of some inexpensive cartridges

Both vintage and inexpensive cartridges like the Shure and Ortofon provide plenty of value, and are great for a starter or budget system. It wasn't tested here, but the Audio Technica AT-3600L is also a great budget cartridge, especially for classic rock. >However, spending the extra scratch to move up to the Grado or AT is certainly worth the spend. Although not part of this shootout, an Ortofon OM-10 would also be worth the jump in price if you're looking for something a bit more dynamic than the Grado but not as exciting as the AT.

New to turntables/vinyl, budget ~$500-750, existing home theater equipment

Nice plinth/base, good speed control, auto stop (though not auto lift/return), comes with a decent cart (Ortofon OM-10) that can be upgraded with stylus changes, cart comes pre-mounted with proper overhang set, assembly is pretty straight forward. Basically, install the cover hinges, put the platter on the spindle, put the belt around the motor pulley, attach the headshell (with cart) to the tonearm using the locking ring, and install the counterweight.

Good repalcement for Dual Turnable

This is the first cartridge I bought in over 35 years to replace a Shure V15. It looks good and sounds good on my Dual Turntable

The essential came with a basic Ortofon 5e stylus and I’ve fallen out of love with Vinyl as the sound is harsh. The hifi shop recommended the Ortofon 10 or 20, and said it would transform the sound, and I heard no difference.
