In need of a new e-reader with note-taking system

If you can afford it, I would suggest you to go for Onyx Boox Max Lumi 2(/1). The screen size will be the same as A4, so you won't have any issues while reading academic papers. Otherwise you can go for a device from Onyx Boox Note series which is an A5 size device.

Great for what it's designed to do, but...

Mostly no complaints on functionality, excellent backlight and document reader, e-ink display feels natural and welcoming.

E.reader for a philosophy student ?

Btw, the devices from Onyx have a split screen option so you can open a book of your choice on one side and notes on the other side which will be really helpful for taking bullet points while reading imo. If your workflow uses this a lot, then go for a 13.3' as the extra screen size really helps. Now my personal recommendations for different screen sizes will be Onyx Boox Max Lumi for 13.3'. It's the best in that size.

I'm looking forward to that smart refresh technology hopefully making pinching and zooming much easier so that I can settle for a 10 inch display.Frankly, I'd feel more secure with a big company because I hear so many problems with Onyx Boox customer support.

Buying advice: monitor or tablet for Bluetooth keyboard typing

Tablets are more portable and more multi-function, but tend to be less optimal monitors. If you want handwriting at all, then you need to go with one of these, as none of the eink monitors have pen input, as far as I know. TLDR: I’d suggest Boox Mira or Lumi 2 for your purposes. You may get by with the Note Air 2 Plus, but this is more of a tablet and less of a monitor.
