If you ask why this gpu... I have currently NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 and it sucks in linux. Windows dragging is stuttering, screen sharing on discord lags whole system (probably uses cpu), frame rate of played video is set globally - so whole xorg has framerate of video. Tried more drivers - older and newer and none was ideal.

I'm running my index with a NVidia 1080, and it's still amazing, but it certainly can't do 120hz, very well... and in real complex scenes it occasionally struggles on 90hz. I've trying to upgrade now for a few months, but I don't want to pay scaplers.

i still do 1080p on my nvidia geforce gtx 1080 gpu with any pc's games max out. it still look good on my lg 48" a1 4k oled tv.

I would say that you can generally make a great pc for gaming for $2k but it also depends on what games your son plays and what he does on his pc in general,. For example if he plays games that don’t require heavy graphics cards or cpu like Minecraft or Roblox then I would recommend the Ryzen 5 3600x with 16gb (8x2) ram and a Nvidia 1660/ 1650/ 1660ti if yo are willing to spend money on a good graphics card, if you don’t want to spend too much money on the graphics card then I would recommend the Nvidia GeForce gtx 1080, it’s cheap and gets the job done.

My Ryzen 9 3950x plays well with my NVIDIA GeForce 1080 ti with normal /high settings on most games. Ryzen 9 3950X doesn't break a sweat. I have 32 GB DDR4 3200hz.

**TL, DR: Nope in non-raytracing games the GTX 1080 Ti wins.**. Although if you’re planning on buying a “New Card” you might be better served by getting an RTX 2070 Super.
