Somewhat Satisfactory Swirly Substitute

Phase 95 is a good get for sure. 4 different 'flavors' of that classic MXR phase sound, basically just going from low intensity (script mode/45) to high intensity (block mode/90) and a couple steps in between. Small Stone is also a classic that's pretty similar the the MXR, but does indeed have it's own slightly different sound. You could also look into a Univibe - it's kind of like a phaser, but has a different throbbing, hypnotic sound to it.

Good but not essential

Great and historic pedal. Very fun to use. Not the best on my board though. If you are saving up to buy would focus on overdrive, fuzz, delay, or tremolo pedals.

great sound but not complete bypass

I can still slightly hear the effect even with the pedal off which is not ok. I will not be able to use this in my live rig because of this.
