 If the average YouTuber reviewing a reverb pedal is here, I'm like way up there, but for the purpose of this video, I'm going to bring it right down into frame here. Okay, here's where I am, here's they are. Now, somebody who actually makes a usable reverb and understands how to make the algorithms for it, they're like here. However, this is a three-dimensional graph, okay? So this up here is like motivation and creativity and success, and this over here is people who make YouTube videos about effects pedals

 But at the algorithm level, it is very hard to deny that the Empress is superior to all of the above. The Specular Tempest is at its very worst, a close second to the Empress reverb. And at its very best, I would say that my favorite algorithm in here, I have a hard time deciding if I like it better than my favorite algorithm in the Empress. And that's saying a lot

 If those synthesizers have onboard effects, they will be turned off, of course. But first, I want to painstakingly go through these algorithms and see what this thing is made of. So so so so so so so so so so so so so As of August 1st, 2018, the $350 price combined with an incredibly diverse set of features and a brilliant combination of excellent reverb algorithms and tonal sampling make the Spekular Tempest an undeniable bargain and easily the best sounding reverb you'll find for under $400. The Specular Tempus: Almost Too Good To Be True

 Quiet on the set, everybody. I'm about to make a video. Nancy, I need you to adjust that aperture

 a bit smaller. It's because my face can't stay in focus. I should turn my fan off.

 After a lot of requests in the comments of this channel, and after a lot of waiting for a

 production done to be finished, I finally got my hands on a GFI specular tempus. As I've said

 before, I take reverb very seriously, and my love and devotion for it runs very deep.

 When I was in grade school, all the other children would call me a knob, presumably for a wet knob

 on a reverb pedal, and I don't even think reverb pedals were commercially available yet. Okay,

 you know the guy who all the algorithm writers and effects pedal companies have to send their

 reverb to for approval? I'm the guy you hired to kill that guy. This is a true story. I was

 once hiking, and I found this cave system, and I probably crawled through it for like an hour or

 so, and I finally got to this enormous, beautiful cavern. And of course, naturally, the first thing

 I did when I walk in, I go, hello, and then listen, and the cave apologized. If the average

 YouTuber reviewing a reverb pedal is here, I'm like way up there, but for the purpose of this

 In this video, I'm not going to play a bunch of billowy guitar melodies through this thing,

 and then give it a thumbs up. Sometimes when I hear a eh or just good enough reverb,

 it's easy to figure out where the comb filters and delays and loop backs are happening.

 When I hear a great reverb, I have no idea, and it's almost like an impossible puzzle. And the

 only person who knows how to solve that puzzle is the person who made the algorithm for that reverb.

 The first time I heard an inexplicably good reverb algorithm in a pedal was the Empress reverb,

 which I reviewed on this channel last year. I feel like in the times I've done reverb pedal reviews,

 a lot of the comments are just people spouting out whatever reverb pedal they own or like.

 Big Sky is still better. I've played with the Immerse, the Big Sky, the Cathedral,

 the Eventide Space. They're all great. They're all really, really good reverbs. And if you like

 it better than any other one, truly, and you're not just saying that because you bought it,

 then it is the best for you. But at the algorithm level, it is very hard to deny that the

 Empress is superior to all of the above. The Specular Tempest is at its very worst,

 a close second to the Empress reverb. And at its very best, I would say that my favorite algorithm

 in here, I have a hard time deciding if I like it better than my favorite algorithm in the Empress.

 And that's saying a lot. The Empress also costs $450. GFI's newcomer here costs $350.

 The Specular Tempest also includes its entire ecosystem of delay algorithms. So it functions

 as both a reverb and delay pedal in which you can use one or the other or both. In that case,

 its closest competitor would be the $700 Eventide H9 Max or the $400 H9 Core with a bunch of

 microtransactions. In my opinion, the reverb and delay algorithms in the Tempest are far superior

 to the H9. And to be fair, the H9 is five years old. I'm a guitarist and I fully intend on using

 this as a guitar pedal. However, most of the videos that demo the product that are on YouTube

 already solely use it as a guitar pedal. Instead, I'm going to use it with a variety of synthesizers.

 If those synthesizers have onboard effects, they will be turned off, of course. But first,

 I want to painstakingly go through these algorithms and see what this thing is made of.
