The stout MSR Lightning Ascent continues to dominate the field of contenders. Throughout our testing period, it performed well. Versatile across an array of snow conditions? Check. Reliable traction on snow, ice, and slush? Check. Capable in steep stuff? Check. We'll stop there, but this model simply performed well in any situation we threw at it. The rubber webbing provides easy fine-fitting and secures the foot in place without question. The rigid hinge linking the deck to the binding facilitates good range of motion and precision when necessary. This is our reigning champ for a reason.
Our beef with this model is the straps that control the rubber webbing on the front of the snowshoe. The strap's tail is pretty short, making adjustment irritating and limiting the size range of compatible boots. This is notable for folks with big feet or bulky mountaineering boots. The short strap is especially hard to use with gloves on or when the rubber is cold and stiff. Nonetheless, this is our favorite model and has been for many years. We like all the models we tested for one feature or another, but the Lightning Ascent brings it all together. And the icing on the cake?  Very, very aggressive tread. Excellent grip for going uphill and downhill. This binding really relieves pressure points on the foot. Unlike some of the other series, the basic snowshoes, you can get pressure points in your forefoot

 They will bend. These ones will take up beating. Having used these personally, I do not slip when I'm going up and down hill. They have the lift bar

 When we move on to the Lightning Ascent, this one, the weight gets a lot lighter. So for longer duration snowshoes, you wanna do multi-days, this one saves a lot of weight in your feet. If you wanna go faster, this snowshoe really, really does it. Again, they come in a variety of sizes

 Having used these personally, I do not slip when I'm going up and down hill. They have the lift bar. So going uphill, rest that heel on there, reduces stress and strain on the foot for up and down hills. In summary, when we're looking at the Revo Ascent and the Lightning Ascent, the Revo Ascent is a little bit cheaper, a little bit heavier

 On the underside of the frame, aggressive, toothed sections yield more traction than traditional snowshoe designs. The toe crampons' steel teeth are spaced to best distribute weight and force on rugged terrain. The crampons' flexibility give your feet more freedom, but are designed to prevent loss of balance. The bindings utilize groundbreaking, freeze-resistant mesh to provide a secure, comfortable fit for any footwear, from running shoes to winter boots

 To determine what size you'll need, consider your weight, including all of the gear you'll be carrying. Also, consider the snow conditions that you usually travel in. Deep, untracked powder requires a larger, wider shoe compared to groomed or packed trails. MSR's guidelines say the 22-inch shoes support up to 180 pounds, the 25-inch shoes support 120 to 220 pounds, and the 30-inch models are designed for 150 to 280 pounds and deep powder conditions

MSR Lightning Ascent

My complaints are that the opening in front of the binding between your foot and front of snowshoe is way too big.  In powder, the snow just billows up through and the front of the snowshoe and piles all over your foot and the snowshoe itself.  The opening in my Atlas is smaller and it does not do this as bad.  This also contributes to float ability

In the end, these are great for climbing where you aren't in a lot of powder but if you mostly travel in flat areas, maybe grab something with a little more loft.

Comfortable but do not float enough.

Some snowshoes are better for flat terrain and soft powder, but when it comes to anything mountainous, the Lightning Ascent MSR snowshoes win hands down. Drop the heel riser down when the terrain flattens out

 This is the newer model of the Lightning Ascent Snowshoe, 26 inch, men's, the blue ones over here, they're the ladies version, in my opinion the best thing about them as Lightning Ascent Snowshoes is this heel raiser, so what it means is that when you're walking uphill your heel is raised, this really makes it quite a lot easier to step uphill, puts less stress on your legs, and this is the newer model with the improved crampon, so I believe that the crampon is a bit longer, as you can see on the back it's really quite spiky, there's lots of grip there, lots of traction, and also with the improved bindings, so from what I've seen I personally believe this is the best snowshoe available anywhere, that's a very strong aluminium around the outside, and then this webbing in the middle to make it light weight, we'll put them on now and take them for a run, now how do you know which one's right and which one's left, well hopefully the camera picks this up, but just there on the front is the letter L, and on the other snowshoe is the letter R, on the same spot on the other shoe. Just give you another view of lifting the heel riser, so I can use the bottom of my training pole, the handle, so just lift that up, and same thing just drop it down, it saves you from bending your back, to lift the heel riser you just use the back of your training pole. Best snowshoes available MSR Lightning Ascent review

These do not float - they have a good deal less surface area than the Tubbs snowshoes I was replacing.  That said, with the tails they may function better, but as is they are not awesome in deep skow:  The other complaint I have is that it’s very easy to catch a ‘toe’ and trip (ending up knees deep in powder).  That said, the traction, particularity on grade is excellent.  I look forward to trying the tails as I think that may make up for the floatation difference and give me the perfect option

Great depending on use

 Let me move this vodka and you just kind of pop it in like this. Let me do this on my lap and that was the that was a poor example of how it works. but let me do this again. Here there we go

 they just and I didn't feel as secure. So I did like the lightning ascent much better. and I love this kicking this up and you know, climbing the hills. and yeah, it's so much faster

 So there you have it. That's just take it for what it is, just not the kind of expert at all on snowshoes. All I know is I want to find a better way.

 and if you're just like if you're off to Japan or something, get the biggest one you can no matter what your weight is I think they're just better in powder and these things are super light I post the weight below but you know I was curious about like you know, like the tubs and these other ones but I'm not sure I'm gonna do it cuz you know I got some drift skis that are kind of like a hybrid between snowshoes and you know, and split board. kind of, you know, like a split board and a snowshoe combined I Might you know I might just be using those from here on out and just dumping these for the occasional time when I go for a walk with my wife and kids or something on the weekend while you guys are all snowboarding and I'm in family time but that's my take I mean it's like if you can get a split, get a split if you're only doing short quick hikes I think these lightning ascent in the 30 with these powder tails is the way to go. get a lot more surface area and although these are a pain in the ass, they hold much better than this lightning. Explorer I did feel it kind of exposed after I went to this with the powder tails

 90% of time I can use a small snowshoe despite weighing 180lbs. The snap on tails provide great flexibility when conditions change and I need more flotation. Great product.

Worth it!

So just be prepared. know your area, know what you're getting into. Take necessary precautions like everybody to get back so they can watch more of my videos. Kid-free snowshoeing where I can start getting off trail really well, getting in some deeper stuff

 but the reason why we went that with that size is one. it gives you really good flotation up to a higher weight than what we would generally carry, even with a loaded pack. So if we decide to go backpacking for a weekend or whatever and we're running 20 to 30 pound packs 35 pound packs, we're still well within the limit. The one nice thing about this shoe on the male and female, as you see, there's a little hook right here and I'm not sure where it hooks in on the other end

 The other thing with them is they are a little bit more of a technical shoe. As far as technical snowshoeing, more ascents, descents, they got better bite than some of the tube frame style. But here's what we're working with: I have a men's and women's version. this one here, the gray with the black frame is the men's version

 and of course, when I do that I'm probably gonna end up sliding and becoming a snowball halfway down the mountain. so I work hard for the money I got. so I don't want to spend it twice and end up buying two sets of snowshoes. so we went ahead spent a little bit more now and there's reasons for that

MSR Lightning Ascent review

The black paint wore off of one of the snowshoes after just one test use. I put in a warranty claim with photos and was given a case number and never heard back. It's been 10 months.
