But for reasons I don't understand, I abandoned them. I think it was mostly because I went "portable" with a work laptop and carrying around a wireless mouse was just more convenient. Also, Logitech and Microsoft discontinued their finger balls and went with thumb ball designs, which I really don't care for. I know I had a Trackball Explorer at one point, but I have no idea what happened to it.

Elecom deft pro for me as well.

I used a logitech trackman marble fx until it stopped working and then an microsoft trackball explorer till it stopped working. Then I used mice until I discovered Elecom last year. Happily back to fingerballing.

Diagonal ball scroll move is not as smooth as the MS Trackball Explorer. I believe the dots in the ms trackball fine tune the cursor with very precisely translations (when bouncing the laser light). Scrolling diagonal feels less smoother in the expert mouse. In conclusion.
