Turns out I’m never satisfied with the brightness that it automatically sets to (I always end up having to readjust almost every time). The advantage of the Kobo is that you can just slide on the left side (up or down) of the screen to adjust brightness on the go (this however only works when you’re in a book). This to me is a much more convenient feature than auto-brightness.

I've been reading from smartphones ever since I got my first 4.7" Android phone in 2014. Never had any issues with eye-strain or pains, I always found it comfortable.

Now that I'm feeling the strain on my eyes piling up over years of not only reading, but generally looking into various screens practically for almost all of my waking time, in the interests of not f-ing over my eyesight, which is not stellar as it is, I've decided to try my first ebook reader and ordered the Kobo Clara HD, as a reasonably priced entry-level device.

I have to say I'm not very happy with it. The "glare-free!" promise seems to me a complete lie, I'm getting a strong and distracting glare if a light-source is directly overhead, not only the sun but a regular lightbulb is enough. It may be a tad less prominent than on a smartphone, but it's a far cry from what I've been led to believe by the device description and internet reviews.

I've also seen a lot of praise for the warm light option on ereaders in general, but I don't see how it's different from the "vision comfort" mode on my android device, which also eliminates blue light and turns the screen reddish? The only advantage is that the option has a slider on the Clara, as opposed to an on/off switch in Android.

Another issue that annoys me is the lack of a light sensor. Having to adjust the light level by hand when I go from darker to brighter rooms and places is a pain.

I'm not used to the very slow responsiveness of the e-ink screen either. Maybe I'll get used to it in time, but for now it's distracting. It takes about a second for a page to turn after I swipe, on Android reading apps it feels much smoother and more natural (not to mention they have a scroll-down mode, which is my favorite way to read).

Having to rely on wifi and not being able to sync/download on the go is mildly annoying, but bearable.

Finally, I could have sworn that backlight was supposed to be straining on the eyes and one of the most famous ebook features is that there's no backlight, but... there is one on the Clara. I don't get this one at all. I guess the point was that you can read with the backlight turned completely off provided you have a sufficient external light source, which admittedly you can't do with an LCD screen. I don't know, I guess I've imagined some sort of side-lighting scheme built into the screen or something exotic like that. Guess I should have researched more carefully.

It's not all bad, there are advantages too. The 6" screen is smaller than the 6.55" one on my current smartphone, but the ratio is MUCH better for reading, allowing for a larger, more comfortable font, it's more square compared to the very elongated screen of the phone, so subjectively it feels much bigger.

And the battery hardly draining is a feature I welcome. I've often read on the phone while it's charging, and the cable REALLY gets in the way, can't really lean the phone on my body because of the protruding connector, and I've been known to kill charging cables entirely by twisting them too much too close to the connector because of that. Knowing I won't have to do that ever again, since simply charging overnight gives me potentially WEEKS of use time (instead of just a handful of hours), is awesome.

I guess that's about it. I'm going to keep using the Clara since I believe it's still probably healthier for my eyes, and I bet I can get used to most or all of the drawbacks I described. Health trumps comfort. I've also learned a lesson about keeping my expectations in check.

I'd be really glad for your input, if there's anyone who had similar experiences, any tips on usage to reduce eye strain or any additional insights, or even point out if I'm using it wrong (should I turn the backlight on only if I have absolutely no external light source handy?) all are very welcome.

I'm in the same situation. I really do like rhe new Paperwhite models but I just cannot stand Amazon as a company or how they operate. If you need a better pdf reading capabilities I would recommend any of those previously mentioned and if you only need an e reader the Kobos

I avoided Amazon for this reason, and also because I didn't want ads all over my books. I've used tablets from Onyx and Likebook instead, and been very pleased with them.

Depends on what matters to you. Ever since I watched a documentary on how people were treated down their entire chain I prefer to pay a little more elsewhere to keep a cleaner conscious. Yes I know, other supply chains might be as evil.

I am very  happy with PocketBook Touch HD3. Open system. No subscription like kobo and I don't miss a library yet. I have a pile of purchases to read through. If I need a library I probably subscribe to the national library for a limited period (eg, holidays).

Just buy it during the Prime sale and set it to airplane mode. That's what I've been doing for years. Purchase your books elsewhere and convert to AZW3 with Calibre. This is the way to minimize Amazon's profit and you can still enjoy using a Kindle.

I havea Kindle Paperwhite and still replaced it with a Boox Nova 2 in order to get access to the more common EPUB format (and others) and to get out of Amazon's ecosystem, or at least not be exclusively locked into it. I still buy books at Amazon, but now I have other options as well.

I will admit though, the new 6.8" Paperwhite looks pretty sweet. I'll probably still skip it though and get a Kobo for my next reader. The Sage looks outstanding.

Same here, also i wanted to customize my device with my own wallpapers which was impossible on Kindle without jailbreaking, which worked only for older devices. I bought a really old, used Kindle 4 (without touch) used for 30 bucks and use it with calibre. Maybe that would be a possibility for you? At least, amazon does not gain anything from that.

i have a kindle because i've bought it for very cheap, unless it happens again i probably will buy something else, not because the product is bad but because being from amazon it is a bit limited in the features

I have a lot of PDF books and used to use Calibre. Also listen to a fair amount of audiobooks, so something with audiobook support would be cool.

Solid Alternative to the Market Leader

Hey everyone.

I'm looking for a budget (just a basic entry-level) e-reader with:

* USB-C
* Backlight
* Ability to sideload EPUBs
* Ability to long-hold a word to get the definition from local dictionary
* Doesn't need to connect to internet for normal usage (except for software update)
* Doesn't need to create an account

The cheapest I could find is Lemon Read on Aliexpress, but not sure about the software. It's using a very old Android version (4.2.2) and I'm not sure if it supports the dictionary feature. I'd be fine with it if the software is nice to use in English language (because I assume the software will be better in Chinese language because they are designed for Chinese market), supports the dictionary feature, and allows EPUBs sideloading.

I live in the US and I’ve been a Kindle user for over a decade now, and have generally been happy with the various devices I’ve owned. I’ve never owned any other dreaded device, but have recently considered leaving the Kindle ecosystem (for reasons I won’t state here) and switching to Kobo. I’m considering one of the devices with Dropbox support due to the ease of transferring my hundreds of ebooks. 

Anyone else switch after years with Kindle and hundreds of ebooks? I’m hesitant to leave due to the features I’ve come to enjoy (X-Ray, multi device syncing, series grouped together on screen, etc.).
