How To Use Overdrive: Ibanez Tube Screamer

 Hello guys, Colin here. One of the most useful effects you can own is Overdrive, as it can

 help push an okie sounding amp into something very tasty indeed. Overdrives can add something

 extra to both clean and distorted amps, but what's the best way to set one up? I'm going

 to show you some of the preferred uses of an overdrive in this video.

 Before we go any further, note that I'm talking about overdrive and not distortion, and if

 you're unfamiliar with the differences between those two, I've got a very handy video just

 here if you want to bring yourself up to speed.

 For these examples, I'm going to use one of the most iconic overdrives around, the

 Ibanez Tube Screamer. This is a TS9 model, modified for more of an 808 sound. The Tube

 Screamer is voiced to attenuate low end, while giving a small emphasis to mid frequencies.

 This has the overdrive working as a coloured boost, preventing a loud amp from getting

 too boomy, and promoting the frequencies that help lift the guitar sound.

 Using an overdrive with a clean amp can help push it into the magical territory of the

 edge of break up, where really digging in with the pick brings out a gritty sparkle,

 but playing softly keeps everything clean. This adds a lot of dynamic difference, important

 on top of the amp's clean sound, but instead force the amp to go into natural overdrive

 with which the pedal's sound can blend. If I turn the gain on the pedal all the way down

 This is the result of the amp being pushed hard by the effect level. Now we can bring

 up the gain on the pedal just a tad to add a little zing. The tone control is a point

 of preference depending on what other equipment you're using. I'd prefer mine to be below

 half way, this takes off some of the harsher high frequencies and leaves everything sounding

 You can use an overdrive to achieve one of two things, with a distorted amp, either to

 boost into solos and lead lines, or to shape your rhythm sound into an aggressive high

 Similarly to what we did with the clean amp, we want to use the overdrive in both these

 applications as some sort of coloured boost, using the effects level to push the amp into

 more saturation, applying only enough of the pedal's gain to achieve the desired result,

 and using the pedal's inbuilt frequency preferences to tighten that low end and promote

 This is especially important when dealing with sounds that use a lot of distortion.

 Too much low end in these applications can sound messy and uncontrolled, while a push

 to the midrange can help lift a guitar solo above all the other instruments in the mix.

 Keeping solos and aggressive rhythms sounds tight and punchy is key to making them sound

 good in the context of other instruments in a band or a recorded mix.

 Here we probably want to have the pedal's volume a little bit higher while still keeping

 Depending on how much we need the sound to cut through, raising that tone control to

 reintroduce some of the highs might be desirable.

 So hopefully that's been useful information about how to use an overdrive pedal, particularly

One of the things that's really nice about the Tube Screamer, again, that's made it the classic that it is, is that it's really touch sensitive, and it's a soft clipping diode that still has a little bit of your original signal retained coming through, which is why you get the dynamics. That's really kind of what you're after

 It was made in the same factory as the 1981 original. You heard it in the intro, let's kind of put this thing through its paces a little bit. No point in going over a feature set, I mean, believe me, on, off, drive, tone, level, let's rock.
