I’d say get him an Ibanez Mikro bass and put the lightest tapewound strings you can find on it, seems like the easiest playing combination.

I have an Ibanez mikro bass, and I love it. It's light (about half the weight of my telecaster), it's fun, it has s great range of sounds - but not as great as a full scale bass, it's a tad muddy and the strings are a little slack for good slap. But it is fun, it plays well.

As many youtube reviews suggested the guitar is well built and has a great finish. But the biggest issue that is really a big deal is fretwork. Fret ends are very sharp, after just sliding fingers on the neck you get scratches from the frets. It has to be sanded if you want to use the guitar.

They are pretty bad. They do not evenly adjust volume or tone but rather they do not do much for most of the travel they have and suddenly, just before the end, they change the volume or tone very abruptly. I want to upgrade to some pots with smoother and more even response. Second, I have no idea what strings I can put on this bass.
