We’re mostly dealing with black bears, I don’t think I live deep enough to see any brown bear. 

I currently only have a 9mm. I’m not very comfortable with that, as I would like to stop a bear before getting mauled.

As far as rifles, anything but AKs, because I really just dont want one for some inexplicable reason. As far as pistols, anything goes, if it's a revolver, I'd want a da/sa, no sao or dao. I need them both to be able to withstand use in harsh summers and harsher winters. The rifle would be for hunting large game such as deer, elk, bear, etc., and home defense. The pistol would be used as a edc ccw, and self/home defense against other people and large animals such as bears. I just want two utilitarian guns that are good, price point on the rifle up to about 1500, and on the pistol about 850.

Inquiring about 10mm pistol

Got bit hard by the 10MM bug. 2 in less than 30 days.

So I've never officially owned a gun, but I spent 3 years as a Recon Scout in the Army so I'm not a total newbie. We mainly trained everything from Beretta M9 (just..so..lacking) to the AT4, but I've never shot a revolver.

I will be moving from CA to UT in a few weeks, and wanted to get a good sidearm to take when I'm out camping in bear country. Smith &amp; Wesson 500 (4 inch version) is my top choice, and I want to buy it as soon as possible.

Would it make a difference to buy it here while I'm in CA and then moved at the end of the month (would I have to re-register it once I get to UT)? Or should I just wait until UT to buy?

Does anybody have suggestions for a better "bear pistol" than SW500 or M629? Revolver preferred, will get others in the collection shortly after..this is more of a day 1/welcome to UT gift to myself.

Anyone have experience with the Ruger or fn 57? I’m looking for a new carry/ woods pistol I have carried my Glock 20 for years now but the 57 is intriguing as it holds 20 rounds in a mag. I understand with the right type of ammo this caliber can be lethal.
